ok, here is the real answer...i know because my vet gave me the answer for my female doing the same thing. She is expressing her dominance. All dogs DO NOT hike their legs when peeing. It is an alpha-dog issue..not a can't decide what gender she is issue. i hope you get this, because the other answers were sooooooo wrong.

Dogs will copy from each other, particularly when they are puppies and are with an older dog. She has learned this behaviour from spending time with a male dog. This often happens. I used to know a cat who used to go around lifting his leg on the wheels of cars - he had grown up in a boarding kennel and been around dogs all his life so he just thought it was the thing to do. I have known a dog that would sleep with his paws tucked in and wash his paws and face and play with a ball of wool just like a kitten, from growing up with cats. Don't worry, it is cute and does no harm.

That's not so bad. I had a female dog that lifted BOTH back legs, stood on her front legs, and peed down her belly and chest. A kid yelled over from across the street, "HEY! Is that dog an acrobat? " I yelled back, "YEAH. This is an Olympic event. She's going for the gold".

You need to show her how it's done. Get out there and squat. She'll get the message.

So she doesn't get pee on her toes. My neighbor had a dog that did this, b/c every time she peed the urine pooled up othe ground and ran onto her feet. Short dogs do this too b/c the stream may trickle down the leg instead of going straight to the ground. Lifting a leg aims the stream away from the body, and keeps it from getting doggy wet...

your dogs not butch, dike or whatever its an alpha female and or she is trying to be very clean and not get it on her. Do you like to get pee on yourself?
It funny how little minded men think strong women must be a dike or a *****. I guess its like when we see a really well dressed man.....he must be gay.
By the way alpha means first, strongest, dominent and omega is last, weakest which I can see alot of omega males answered this question.

In my experience, your dog is a dominant female. If she was in a pack setting she might be the Alpha female.

2 possible answers to this either she is quite dominant or supposidly when they are pups in the womb its where she has got a small amount of testostarone passed through when they were deciding to be either male or female, not sure how true or exact that theory is but it works for me!

Its a dominance thing, my girlie dog (not allowed the b word!) does it when shes overmarking anothers dogs pee but when shes just going normally she squats.

It means she wants to cover the scent of another female's urine with her own. Simple as that. There must be a dog around she would like to attract or she is coming into "that time of the month" either way she is on the pull !!
