Dogs don't have a regular, steady heartbeat as people do..It speeds up and slows down much more frequently..Only your vet could tell you if her rhythm is normal..

Did a vet tell you your dog has an irregular heart beat? I just took my dog to a Cardiologist vet(heart doctor) for an irregular heart beat and she has been put on heart medication. Please have your dog checked. It could be something serious,as mine, a matter of life and death. Good luck!!!! No, that is not old age for a small dog.

49 is the high side of middle age...No irregular heartbeat is normal. If she's not struggling to breathe or in pain, she should I'd think be alright.

It is called a congenital defect meaning it was a "birth defect" and might be attributed to bad breeding. Even the best of breeders can avoid the occasional birth defect. It is not abnormal for this to happen but it is unfortunate. Your dog probably needs minimal exercise and a good diet from science diet like H/D, but talk to your vet about it.

Your dog is not old and the irregular beat is. The dog needs medication, see a vet asap.

No she is not supposed to have irregular heartbeat. My dog's heart beats faster than usual only when she's scared or being scolded.
