Mehr or Meher can mean several things:

Mehr or Meher (in Persian: مهر) means sun and love.
Mehr is also a name for the proto-Indo-Iranian Mitra.
Mehr is also the Zoroastrian Yazata's Meher and Dae-pa-Meher name for Mithra.
Mehr is also the name of the first month of autumn in Iranian calendar.
Mehr is also the name of both a month and day on the Zoroastrian calendar, from which the Iranian calendar derives its month names, dedicated to Meher.
Mehregan is the Zoroastrian autumn festival that originated as a ritual dedicated to Meher (Mitra).
Mehr is also a School of thought (the literal meaning of the name is kindness).
Mehr is also a surname in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, used alone or along with another word. For instance the name, Mehrdad (Mithrades in Greek and Latinized form), is consisted of words Mehr = Mithra; Dad = Des = given.
Mehr in Arabic means: the wife's gift paid to her before marriage.
Mehr in German means more.

In Islam, mehr is the gift that the husband gives the wife on their marriage, and it is not returnable (except, i think, where the marriage is not consummated and is subsequently annulled).

It's supposed to be something that the wife has in case something happens to the husband, and then the wife can support herself.

The wife has the option to decline it, which happens a lot these days bcos they are often educated and self-sufficient.

Sometimes the mehr can be a nominal amount, like $100, or a gold coin, but there are women (or their families) that ask for houses, cars, jewellery etc. Ur only supposed to ask for what the husband can afford tho.

The wife also has the option to let the husband give her the mehr at a later date (i.e. after the ceremony), e.g. a year, or 10 years or even on his death (but then it has to be specified in his will, so that the wife can get it before the estate is split up).

It does mean "more" in German, but it's not a noun so shouldn't normally be capitalized.
