Some difference in the mechanicals and trim, but the noticeable difference is about 5 inches of legroom behind the front seat. The Passat uses the same chassis as the Audi A4. Adult passengers in the rear can sit comfortably. The Jetta has a lot less leg room in the rear. Another big difference is that the engine in a Jetta is transverse mounted (side to side), but the engine in a Passat/Audi is longitudinal (fore and aft).

Both good cars. The Passat will cost more and have more features, but is also more likely to retain value than the Jetta.

For anyone that thinks that the passat is the luxury one, come look at my stock Jetta GLX; leather seats and steering wheel, heated and cooled seats CD/MP3 player, woodgrain etc. etc. The only difference is the size, Passat is bigger, and the Passat has an option for 4wheel drive (4-motion) It depends what you want it for... both are luxurious, the Passat is simply bigger, which means it wieghs more. They are both built to the exact specifications, and last the same amount of time. The passat is more expensive, but only because it is bigger.

passats are a higher quality car, more luxurious, and more expensive. They are also still made in germany. Jettas are cheaper both in cost and quality... they are generally built in mexico. Jettas are more fun, but not as well built (at least now a days)
