Not sure, but it may have something to do with the fact that they are not allowed to marry. I disagree with that notion. Men and women can and should marry. Being married would not hinder a person in ministry. Catholic rituals are outdated and wrong, IMHO.

Actually, the rate is about 1/6th of the general population. The Catholic Church actually does a pretty good job of keeping the abusive out, however some slip through. Part of the disaster that mostly happened in the 1980's was the result of bad advice. One of the critical pieces that is missing in most press reports and which I found surprising, was that most psychologists believed paedophilia was treatable, not only was it considered treatable but it was considered one of the most treatable of psychological disorders.

What psychologists did not know at the time was that the population they were seeing was almost exclusively those people seeking voluntary treatment. If you voluntarily go for treatment it seems it has a higher "cure" rate than almost any other disorder. However if it is mandatory that you receive treatment, it has one of the lowest "cure" rates. So while everyone thought they were doing the right thing at the time, they were really making it easier for abusers to gain access to children.

It was compounded by the procedures in the Catholic Church to protect people. Because the Catholic Church is both global and the oldest continuous institution on Earth, it has procedures haven't changed for millenia. Remember, in most times in history and in most places in the word, had such news became public the child would be killed or ostracized. Think of the thousands of honor killings that go on right now in Muslim countries. That was normal in Christian countries too for a long time. Things are handled in a way that keeps everything private. The danger of such a system is that if you can figure out how to keep the appropriate people from talking to each other, then you can thrive as an abuser.

Most paedophiles are elementary school teachers, coaches and Boy Scout leaders. Paedophiles seek out employment that puts them in contact with children. The Catholic Church is far from alone in having this problem in its ministries and actually does better than many denominations, but it is the largest by far, its secrecy had horrible consequences and it is the most reported group in the news.

It is common to report Catholic news, it is rare to report other denominations unless they are doing something very controversial.

wow you just opened a can and I hope you are ready to deal with what you will hear.........

oh ya here is my opinion......i think if you took all the other religions and put their child molesters up against the Catholic priests then you will see that there are just as many (unfortunately) in the other sects as well. This is a stereotypical question and this does not apply to the majority of any religion.

So many?

There have been a few,

There have also been, Fathers, Coaches, Teachers, Preachers, Imams, Uncles, Brothers, Scout Leaders, Bosses, Janitors, Athletes, Monks, Rabbis, Politions, Etc. that have been Pedophiles.

Why do you single just the few priests out?

Peace!

Because UNLIKE Muslims, it's not allowed by tradition and law. See, if it's not a crime, then it isn't a sin and it isn't wrong, hence you can't get in trouble for it when you do 9 year old girls.

So, all we have to do to make the Priests "normal" is to just get rid of all these silly laws about children.

Simple, ain't it!

Priests are people to, and some people do bad things. Just because you are a priest doesn't mean you don't have evil thoughts. Priests aren't allowed to marry, have sex, or masturbate, so they might have those evil thoughts.

They aren't. That's like saying, "Why are so many German's nazies" or "Why are so many Wiccan's really Satanists". It's not true and it's unfair to generalize the many for the actions of a few. Let me just repeat that, my two examples, like your question, are false.
