I'm not talking about the hard part of the rind; I mean the soft, light green part of it. Someone attributed it to my stomach flu when I was six but I doubt it (probably a virus).

No i have never heard of it making someone ill. The rind is the part they make "watermelon pickles" out of.... so that would not have been the cause of your illness.
I once caught the flu after eating a star fruit and cannot eat them to this day.... hope you have better luck then me with the watermelon :)

You do not get the flu from watermelon.
The non-red parts might give you a tummy ache, but so would the red part, if you over-ate.
One of the best things in the world to eat is PICKLED watermelon rind. It is soft like a pickle, but cinnamony and very sweet. DELICIOUS!

If you eat too much of anything you can have a reaction. Watermelon rind is what watermelon pickles are made of, YUM! If you've never had them, you've missed out!

No I eat it all the time, my great-grandmother loves that part best, and the person that stated about the "pickles" is right. You can make "pickles" out of it. It won't make you sick unless you normally get sick from eating watermelon.
