They have added a new accounting machine and it takes forever to get through the line and after lunch you see students walking through the halls still eating lunch. It has gotten to the point where hardly anybody eats lunch. instead they carry it in purses and they eat in classes. I think I should petition because it is just not right but I don't know if it's worth getting possibly suspended over. It wouldn't be right to suspend me over something like that but they have the right. So, is it even worth this trouble?

I think it's worth it but you have to do it in a civilized way. Get the signatures in a reasonable manner then head over with a friend or two to the prinicpals office and explain to him/her on behalf of your school why it would be better. They will respect you and you will have a better chance than causing a riot!

Some issues to bring up:
-you need a break to let lose so you can concentrate when you're back in class
-the food helps you to think
-less skipping of school (kids are more likely to leave for lunch and not come back)

I agree with your standing and hope you win this "case". Good luck!

They cannot suspend you but if you are going to start a petition in school be serious and ready to stand up for what you belive. Schools do not take petitions lightly and you will be clled into the office once they find out about it. So if you are sure you want to go there then start it up. But there are other ways other than a petition to voice your concerns. Talk to your class pres. Have them talk to the class advisor and so forth. Attend a County school meeting.

One of their arguments will be why the hell are the students and parents so lazy that they cannot send the child to school with a balanced lunch. In the end the costs of either are about the same. Been there done that.

5-10 minutes isn't healthy. It isn't enough time to even eat a regular lunch!

protest away, honey. A call to the Superintendent of the schools should take care of this. Oh and you are entitled to the break. If they give u any noise, point to the passage in your school handbook that tells about lunch hours and time. There SHOULD be a designated time.

Seriously, start with a call to the superintendent of schools - and then if no resolution, a call to the local news team describing the conditions - no school or appointed official wants that kind of publicity.

If you feel strongly about an issue at school you have to present your concerns to the school board at a meeting in a calm, rational intelligent manner. Petitions are not the proper way to address any situation initially. You have to act mature and express your concerns and await a response. If the response is not satisfactory you then move on to the next level.

Keep in mind, this is a new situation and they are probably still working out kinks. Have you given the issue enough time to work itself out? Or are you among the new breed of youth that feels they need everything their way instantly?

I doubt you would get suspended just from writing a petition. I've known of people writing petitions over things at school, and I haven't heard of anyone getting in trouble for it. Sometimes, it even actually worked. If it's something that you feel needs to be changed, you should try and do something to change it.

In the high school my children attended, a student was sent home because the staff didn't like her hairstyle. She was literally thrown out the front doors of the school scraping her knee and ripping a new pair of jeans. My girls asked permission to style their hair in the same way. It was not against school rules. We stood up for our kids and learned that the supreme court has ruled that "civil rights do not end at the classroom door" There was a court case and much media coverage radio and local news. Principal was fired, My daughter got a full ride scholarship. It's well worth it to see that they practice what they teach, especially at lunchtime.

As long as you go about everything is a respectful manor you will be fine....don't get on a rant of yell or anything, but gather signatures and approach the principle in a respectful manor, explain you side, as for his opinion, and then together work out something that will settle the situation....You should not get suspended if you handle yourself well.

IN fact you will probly gain a great deal of respect from the staff if you go about things in a calm, thoughout, respectful way, and don't just go off on them like a lot of kids today would.

Have a parent contact the school board or the superintendent and describe the problem. Have them say they are coming to the school to observe. This is not acceptable. If you are suspended, go straight to the news media. Call a nice TV news anchor and tell your story. Best of luck to you! Things can change.

Petitions are the mature way to address problems. It is highly unlikely you would be suspended but keep your parents in the loop, just in case there is an idiot in your schools administration.
congratulations on your enlightened approach
