I want my next dog to be a mellow sweetie who does not bark at people, run around excessively, and who is friendly to everyone. What are your suggestions?

Not sure that there is one specific breed known for being mellow, but here are my suggestions:

1) Choose a mixed breed. Purebreds tend to be more high strung because they are bred for certain personality and physical traits that don't always come out right. Mixed breeds (mutts from the pound) tend to be healthier and more mentally stable.

2) Choose a larger breed rather than smaller. Small dogs like miniatures and toy breeds are really yippy and high strung. The larger the dog, the calmer they tend to be.

3) If you're not set on a puppy, get a dog that's a bit older. It will already be housetrained and much calmer than a puppy.

I think Shih Tzus are a mellow breed. I own a Shih Tzu. She likes to follow me around my house. Also, she is not a demanding dog or bark a lot. In my opinion my dog is kind of lazy. She does not like going on long walks and she only likes to play for at least thirty minutes at a time. She loves going on car rides and laying in my lap. If you cannot already tell, I prefer small dog. I own a Bichon and he is hyper. He is always running all around my house. He cries a lot when he does not get his way. Beware that not all dogs’ personality matches the breed standard like my Bichon.

I would recommend a dachsund. have had 2 over the years and they are the most friendly dogs I have ever had. They are the type where they go to people and beg for attention. These 2 have been my little lap buddies all these years and my kids love lugging the younger one around the house.

As for the barking thing,, well all dogs do that and it is on how you raise the dog. My 2 will bark at anyone ( including me) that comes to the door and I have to reassure them that everything is okay.

The friendliest dog I ever had was an Irish Wolfhound.
He was HUGE 160 pounds and most people were afraid of him but he was a big sweetie. He loved everyone and everything.
His idea of a great day was to get out of bed go outside and do his business and then come in eat and get on the couch for a nap.
He would go for a walk if you wanted but if not he would hold down the couch all day.

Hmmm..

(1) Avoid any of the working breeds - they have a lot of energy. This means Rotts, Boxers, Huskies etc

(2) Avoid any of the herd guarding breeds - they'll let you know if a pin drops outside. This means Kuvasz (I adore mine - he is a service dog), Great Pyreenes, Bouviers

(3) Avoid any of the sporting breeds - they were breed to run and go all day long. This means setters, spaniels, goldens, labs etc.

(4) Avoid any of the herding breeds - this means collies of any type, Aussies, shetland sheepdogs, corgis . They were bred to be on the alert with their charges and go all day long.

(5) Avoid any of the alert and energetic smaller breeds - Bostons, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese

(6) Skip the hounds - they love to run

Newfoundlands love to lounge about as do someof the toy breeds

I've worked at an animal clinic for a while and most of the Basset Hounds that come in are pretty easy going. The only problem with them is they'll occassionally start baying...but that's just a hound for you.

Yellow labradors are like this, I had one. But they are a bigger dog and need some room to play like a yard. Others similar are:
Golden Retrievers, Collies, or if you need small dog: Maltesse or Dasshounds
Get a Dog Reference Book and look up each breed. See what the pros and cons are for you. Weight each of them and then pick the one that fits you and your lifestyle the best.

Maltese and Bichon frise are about the mellowest of the small breeds.. Golden Retrievers are often mellow and versatile for all living conditions..If you shop on petfinder, the foster homes describe the dogs very well, so you can pick one for your lifestyle.

THe most mello dog I have been around are Great Danes. They are big, but love to just lie around. THey think they are big lap dogs....They are very friendly and pretty smart and easy to train. You will go through the normal puppy stage but it does not seem to last as long as it does with other breeds that I have been around. They are very good dogs if you don't mind them big.
