Firing Order is the same for all the "Cleveland" type variants
351C 351M 400M,,,,and also the 385 series 429's and 460's
It's > 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Ford numbers their cylinders starting from FRONT Passenger side of engine.
R/H Front 1-2-3-4
L/H Front 5-6-7-8
The other fellow who answered,Patriotnutrients,
was CORRECT about the firing order being cast onto the engine somewhere.
On 400's there's a row of numbers on Top>Front of Intake Manifold on one of the manifold runners,,it's in the area between the carb and distributor and looks obvious when you see it.
I think it may even say "Firing Order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8"
It's "written" in raised letter casting and hard to miss.
Each cylinder number is also cast into the manifold near where it bolts to the head,,,many times it's "written with a circle around it"
You might want to Double check my numbers,,with what actually appears on the engine's manifold,,,it's easy to find.
Make Sure that You've established #1 Cylinder on the distributor cap.
The Rotor should be pointing at #1 Cap Contact as the R/h Front Cyl is coming up on compression.
It's not too much trouble to be mistaken & "Off" by one plug wire
Good luck,hope that helps
