In Genesis 1:26, God grants Adam and Eve "dominion" over the earth. Other translations use "rule." What does this mean to you and what does it suggest about our relationship to the environment?

Dominion in that sense meant to care for. The Hebrew word used in the original scriptures means to care for.

We are to care for this earth and all that God has given us in it. Which means no strip farming. No factory farms. No torturing animals.

Reading the answers I think there is a sliding together of the two ideas Dominion and Stewardship... Dominion is Control, Stewardship is the proper care being used in that control.. I believe it is unwise to exercise dominion without a mind to stewardship... Jim

Dominion doesn't mean destroy so whatever it means denying we should look after the environment is not looking after the thing God gave us dominion over

It means complete and uncontested authority. God essentially said, "If it's broke, don't come toMe; you fix it"! He handed Adam and Eve the keys to the executive washroom in a manner of speaking and they betrayed His trust. It means that man is responsible for his physical and spiritual environment, to keep it clean and presentable before God, to restore it's resources where we can and make sure (with God's help of course) that it's capable to sustain life and all it's ecosystems.
