I hope you are up for some hard work...the non-toxic (sort of) way is to start with olive oil. Soak the hair/head with olive oil, cover with a plastic bag(not the face please!) and allow to soak for an hour or two (longer the better). Purchase a lice comb set and bedding/furniture lice spray from pharmacy or department store. Put the person with the soaking head in a non-contaminated area no laying on couches etc. Tear apart bed to the mattress all bedding must be washed in hot water and dried hot. put all stuffed animals/dolls with hair etc in plastic bags and seal them. Put away for at least two weeks....three or four works better. Spray both sides of the mattress and allow to dry then vacuum. Vacuum the carpets, spray the furniture & vacume. Wash every coat, hat, glove. seal up back packs etc. after all that start to comb out hair. I recommend you put the victume on a chair with a cut open trash bag underneath next to the kitchen sink (trash bag will catch drips etc.) rinse comb often! Use the big teeth comb first then the nit comb. Comb & Comb & comb. Treat with oil every day for 3-4 days then at least once a week for 6 weeks. Throw out pillows (easier than trying to treat over and over). Good luck, it's a ton of work. And it SUCKS. What ever you do do not send your child to school with lice...they jump and infect everyone.

Home Treatment

Home treatment with nonprescription medications can usually get rid of lice. These products include:

Nix (permethrin 1% creme rinse).
Rid, Pronto, A-200, R&C, Triple X, or Barc (shampoos and gels with pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide).
A new type of hair sealant that kills head lice by suffocating them is currently under medical review.

If nonprescription methods are not effective, a stronger medication may be needed. Your health professional may prescribe a more concentrated (5% instead of 1% nonprescription) form of permethrin (Elimite), malathion lotion, or shampoos containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide.

Health professionals in the United States recommend using a lotion or shampoo to kill the nits as well as lice. In Britain, where lice have become resistant to medicated lotions and shampoos, one study found that using special fine-toothed combs with a conditioner was moderately successful in getting rid of head lice. You may choose to remove the nits through combing to improve your appearance. Cleaning combs, brushes, clothing, and other objects can help prevent lice from spreading to other members of your household.

You have to treat the infected head with lice shampoo according to the directions on the bottle and comb out the nits. They sell the shampoo at drug stores and walmart and places like that. You then have to treat, or wash in hot water if possible, EVERYTHING that the infected head may have come into contact with...including furniture, automobile seats, bedding, clothing, EVERYTHING!! They sell spray for this purpose. Make sure to check the heads of everyone the person has been in contact with, especially family members, and treat them also if needed. If you only treat the hair and not all the other things then the person will just continue to get lice again and again.

Has "your friend" tried RID? If that doesn't work, go to a naturalist or homeopath of sorts. My boss's kids had headlice that were resistant to RID. She looked into the prescription stuff and thought it was too harsh/dangerous. So she consulted a friend of hers who is into herbs and such. They created this concoction of coconut oil and tee tree oil. For some reason it killed the lice. I imagine it suffocated them by plugging up their spiracles with the oil. (Spiracles are the "valves" through which they breathe.) It doesn't kill the eggs, so you have to use the stuff on a regular basis to catch After you work the stuff through your hair you comb out the dead adults. Then wash your hair. You will probably have to do this a few times. From what I remember, nits mature to adults within a week. So maybe every 4 days? Anyway, just be careful when washing it out. That stuff solidifies at a rather high temperature. So it could clog your pipes. (Especially in the winter weather.)

For us, Rid and Nix did not work. We spent over $100 on the stuff with no results. I suggest getting the Lice Meister lice comb. It will remove the nits and you can use rubbing alcohol to kill the lice. You will have to tumble dry all the bedding every day and boil all the combs and brushes. You should be rid of the lice in one week or less.

Go to the pharmacy and get a lice shampoo. It usually takes three applications but it will kill lice and their eggs. Don't apply the shampoo without gloves on and make sure that whoever has lice doesn't share brushes or hats or anything with other people.

The most important step in treating a head lice infestation is to treat the person and other family members with head lice with medication to kill the lice. Wash clothing and bedding worn or used by the infested person in the 2-day period just before treatment is started.
