if she needs the medication it is fine as long as her doctor is aware of what she is taking and how much. your other responders are concerned for the infant but overreacting. many pregnant women take narcotics while pregnant. the problem is actually if you are addicted to narcotics and then stop them, that will cause a problem for the baby. heroin addicts do not have problems because they are on heroin, it is the up and downs of dosing and withdrawal that causes stress on the baby. pregnant heroin addicts are switched over to methadone and they generally stay on the methadone throughout the pregnancy in order to keep a steady state of narcotics and to avoid the withdrawal phase which happens with heroin before the next fix is available. it could be worse if she stops the medication at this point, she should talk this over with her ob doc

oxycontin is an extended release pill that is supposed to start working in about 1.5 hours and last up to 12 hours. If you cut the coating it is no longer an extended release tablet and the entire amount of the drug is absorbed immediately which means it is too much all at once and as well it will not last as long as expected either. I would not say that it is safe to do what you have done. I would either have the prescription changed to oxycodone (the immediate release version of oxycontin) or have it changed for oxycontin 20mg. Be careful and I hope the pain gets better. C

It is only safe if a doctor prescribed them during pregnancy or said that it was okay during, and I don't think any doctor would recommend that.

No, it's not okay if she wants a healthy baby....Did she tell her doctor she was pregnant??????? I wouldn't take anything unless my doctor knew I was pregnant and told me the risks of anything he was prescribing...
