how can i help her gain weight?

she was the runt of the litter, always been a little on the skinny side. one summer we lived in nyc in an apartment with no a/c and she barely ate all summer. once the winter came she started eating better and gained weight, she looks good now. but shes still not chubby or anywhere near fat, like a pug should be.

is she just always going to be a tiny/thin pug because of that important summer of growth that she missed when she was young and wouldnt eat.. or is there something i can do to help her put on weight? thanks!

(pic of her: as you can she, she is not thin or malnourished, just not "fat" like a pug should be.. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/kjb926/littlebaby.jpg thanks again!)

do NOT..repeat...do NOT let your Pug get "fat." They are healthiest between 14-18 pounds. Trust me. Ours lived to just past 16 years. We never gave him table food or people food. Made sure he was active. Regular vet visits. Your dog was lethargic in summer because Pugs MUST be kept cool in the summer and be warm in the winter. They have a flat snout and it is difficult for them to breathe under anything less than ideal conditions. Let her be "thin" as you call it. For Pugs--THIN RULES!!!!

She looks exactly like a pug should! Or at least what we always considered normal since I started showing and training 40+ years ago. Unfortuantely too many people over-feed these smaller breeds and think that "fat" is normal.

If she is a finicky eater, you might try Solid Gold Dog Food for small breed dogs.

I feed free choice and when I switched to Solid Gold, my then 13 year odl Chow/Aussie lost her excess weight and my then 1 year old Kuvasz put on weight.

You can not buy Solid Gold at the supermarket. Wal-Mart or Petsmart type stores. Go online to their webiste and find the dealer closest to you.

She probably reduced her food intake in the summer becasue she was uncomfortable in the heat. Even air conditioning cn be a problem for some dogs and people - it gives me a headache.

How old is your pug? If she is over a year then she should pretty much have reached her size; if her parents were small then she will remain that size also; you don't want to have her over weight because this is hard on their system and is also hard on their breathing. If she is spayed that will definitely increase her size, but you won't be able to show her or have pups if that is your desire. Should keep her in top shape by exercising her regularly and to have her over weight creates lots of problems. Be happy that she isn't :"fat" this means you are taking excellent care of your dog. Good Luck!

Talk to your vet - if he/she is not worried about her being under-weight, then I would not worry about it. Plus, as she gets older, it will be much healthier for her to not be carrying extra weight around.

Go to the AKC (www.akc.org) and check out the breed standard. It will tell you what the best weight is for the breed, and it is probably less than you think.

Honestly, I think in NYC you get so used to seeing overweight dogs, that you don't realize what a "normal" sized dog is supposed to look like

She is a doll and looks fine. Our Pug is a male and weighs 15 pounds, the vet says he is perfectly healthy. If you are truly worried about her, try different foods or speak to the vet. I know when we had Rotts the vet said to feed them cottage cheese with their food to add to their weight.
