Book advanced tickets as early as possible. Most train companies start offering bargain tickets 10 weeks in advance, and those are the heavily discounted fares, like for instance London to Newcastle return for as low as £17.80 if booked on GNER's website, compared to £91.40 if you buy a return saver ticket on the day.
These tickets are non refundable though and have limited change, so make sure you can stick to the train you're booked on before buying any tickets.
It's very much a first come first serve policy, so get in there as quickly as possible.

You should goto trainline where you can book the best value fares. If you book as far in advance as possible, you will be able to get a Super Apex.
Virgin Trains are offering great fares on thie services at the moment through trainline.

If you book in advance you can get really cheap fares. For example London-Sheffield for as little as £3.95
It works out cheaper to buy them online then pick then up from a fast ticket machine. Don't bother with the next day delivery or insurance if you want to keep the cost down.

Regard rail companies like you would the cheap airlines and book well in advance eg.my daughter as travelled many times between Preston and Glasgow with Virgin Rail for around ten pounds.

Find your train route via http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and then go to 'pricing'. All the available fares will show.
Normally, the earlier you can book the more options there will be.
