I'm 20 years old, I'm a girl, and I wear glasses. most of the time i feel self conscious about it, so i go around wearing contact lenses. I'm not a superficial person, and I'm confident most of the time. I know it's what's inside that matters, but still, I just feel more comfortable the way i look w/o them. This wouldn't be so much a problem if the contacts weren't starting to irritate my eyes at times. I've considered the Lasik operation, but then I'm not sure it's really safe, or effective. I was wondering if this self-consciousness an age thing and would go away by time.

Does anyone else have the same problem? I could really use some words of encouragement. Or has anyone tried the Lasik operation? i'm trying to collect people's views to decide whether i should have it done.

Thanks :)

I feel the same way all the time. I wear glasses and up until about a year ago I was wearing contact lenses. I only wore the glasses at home. I had to stop wearing contacts because of a "dry eye" condition. I always feel like I stand out more or something with glasses, I feel that they don't suite me.
I think over time you begin to stop caring, i guess. There are days that I will do my hair a certain way that Ithink makes the glasses look more appropriate on me. They are also days where I don't just don't care....
I think it's normal to feel this way because of the whole "4 eyes" things and other comments kids make...it sticks with you somewhat.
My mom had laser surgery on both her eyes and it went well, there were no complications and no pain. She can see better than ever. I hope this helps

I did when I was young and stupid. Now (and for a long time) I know that you would look stupider bumping into things and squinting to read than you would by wearing glasses. Also, you are most likely judged more by your personality than your eyesight. You may find some glasses that look better on you than the ones you have. Lasik is great, from what I've heard, but you may have to have it done again in 15 years or so. It's pretty expensive now. I think that like everything else, the price may come down. It's perfectly safe, but I'm waiting for the price to come down.

I'm 34, female and I'm still have issues about wearing my glasses in public. If your contacts are bothering you, ask the eye dr to change the type of contacts you wear. I've worn contacts/glasses since I was 12. I've considered the Lasik, but it would not do me any good, i would have to wear my glasses all the time.

I wear my contact more than I wear glasses, but when I see other girls with thier glasses on, I think 'hey that's so cute, I think I'll wear my glasses tomorrow...' Lots of people have had Lasik in my family and it seems pretty safe, they have all had good results, but I say wait till you are older to decide, just in case something bad would happen. Keep your head up!!

I've worn glasses for years and have no problem with feeling self-conscious. It's just not an issue for me. There are SO many cute frames available...glasses have really become a fashion statement.

I'd find some cute frames, wear those glasses and keep your head up! No reason to be worried about them at all.

Good luck

Glasses make you look sophisticated and smart. Wear them! Always pick glasses that fit who you are as a person..I wear glasses and contacts at other times. Check your brand of contacts, Focus irritate me..try Acuvue..If all else fails research the operation. I have heard good things about it.

Personally, I love my glasses. I usually stick with the cat eye look like Lisa Loeb sports. People say my glasses make me look smart and trendy which makes me feel good because I have beautiful eyes and thought the glasses would hide them. Also, I love being versatile. I love being able to go from sophisticated to sporty in a matter of seconds.

I do too, so I wear contacts most of the time too. Recently I got an ulcerated cornea and have had to wear glasses for two and a half weeks! My boyfriend says it's great, because then he gets to sleep with two (equally hot) girls! It may not be as bad as you think!
