Just yesterday, I tried this and found out what happens. The recipe called for 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening, I replaced it all with butter. By the way, this was a really sweet recipe (had 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar and 6 T. corn syrup) Anyway, those cookies were delicious, but were almost like candy. I've made the recipe before (the "right" way) and got a soft chewy cookie.

Replacing the shortening with butter gave me a thinner, somewhat crisper cookie. (because the butter cooks "faster")

Go ahead and try it and see how it comes out for you. After all, experimentation is part of what cooking is about. I really liked the results!

Your best bet is to find a recipe that uses butter and not shortening. Butter and shortening have similar cooking qualities but you will need to adjust the amount of flour and salt wich leads to adjusting the baking soda/powder etc etc etc.

You will get a softer cookie using shortening one that is slightly chewyand moist which is what you want in an oatmeal cookie.

You can use the butter instead of shortening, in the same amount, but just lower the oven temperature by 25 degrees, since butter burns quicker than shortening

Use the same amount of butter that the recipe calls for in shortning, just leave out the water that you are supposed to add in with the shortning. Usually is this:1 cup of shortning plus 6 teaspoons water is equal to 1 cup (2 sticks) butter. Make sure that the butter is room temperature and not just out of the fridge, it makes it easier to blend. Works out great.

yes it is okay if you use butter. I would also use butter instead of shortening. I do the same with chocolate chip cookies

Use the butter. It isn't a trans-fat. Better flavor, too. You can add raisins with no problem.
