its safe its not at all like these people are saying. You shouldn't travel any unknown area (here or abroad) solo and you should learn some spanish so you dont get taken advantage of.

just use your common sense and youll be fine

BTW..alot of the reasons given for not going to Mexico can happen in any country, including this one

except for the beheading..that was just an ignorant answer

DON'T GO ALONE!

One time, when I was a few years younger, I went to Mexico with my mother, my aunt, and a couple friends.

A lot of the guys there were actually grabbing my arm and pulling me away, it was really scary!

And one guy said "Leave your daughter with me, I like her."

Please, be very careful in Mexico, and bring a large group of friends with you just in case.

I don't think it would be wise to travel there alone. Mexico is beautiful, but just like any other place....it has it's rough parts! It's better to go with someone. At least you won't be alone, and have to be around all strangers...

Why don't you do some community service in the United States, why go in another country and then something happens then the US govt needs to interfere.

There are enough homeless and needy children in here, do some community service at home then think of the world.

its perfectly safe, but I also recommended doing it in a group setting. If your spanish isn't top notch or if you don't know the local customs, you can get easily mislead.

try to find a service group, such as the flying samaritans or other local organization that travels across the border, the red cross, etc.,

Mexico??? Oh my gosh, I have a story. Last summer, my family and I went to California, and we were thinking about driving down to Mexico, so we did, and the police stopped us for no reason, and it was so hard to understand hem because they were speaking spanish, and they almost took one of us to the police station if we had not paid the $400 dollars, and then they chased us out of Mexico once they had the money, which they chetaed us on. Bottom line...no, Mexico is not safe.

Look at the State Department travel advisories for Mexico.

Do you know anyone there?

Alone is not a good idea. Also watch out for the people.

My friend went there with her family, and they went to the beach, and she put her stuff in a spot then went to the ocean to swim came back and one guy stole some of her things, and tried to sell it back to her.
