Hi all, I have a 5 month old chihuahua puppy which I love very much and found out I'm pregnant with my first child. Has anyone had a chihuahua and young babies or kids? Was the chihuahua good with kids? I'm worried about both the chihuahua hurting the baby or the baby hurting the chihuahua.

Chihuahuas are good with children. However, keep them apart until after the baby learns to control his/her motions. I had a problem with the baby hitting the dog. But he meant to pet the dog but doesn't understand how. The chihuahua became very afraid of the baby. She would go hide whenever the baby is around. But don't worry, they are the best of friends ever since the baby learned the difference between "pet" and "hit".

Chihuahuas are very friendly. When the baby is first home, she would sleep next to him and guard him. That was the days when he doesn't do much other than eat/sleep. But once the baby gets active, be careful.

Yes, this can be fixed, though it sounds like typical chihuahua! Chihuahuas know they are small, but they are not wimps. So they make it their policy to intimidate anybody larger. A lot of small dogs do this. It's pretty effective to keep from being bullied. First you need the dog to obey you. Your dog should be able to obey "sit," "stay," "heel," and "down." If you can't teach these behaviors on your own, invest in an obedience class. A lot of chihuahua owners are scared to discipline such a tiny dog, and end up with Dogzilla. Sure they aren't as dangerous as an aggressive Doberman, but still..... So when you take the dog for a walk and it starts to threaten children, make it sit. Insist upon this. Your dog may be stubborn, but you have to enforce your will. Tell your dog how good he is for sitting. Whenever he doesn't threaten children, tell him how great he is! Take him to watch children at the park. Tell him how cute the kids are and how good he is for being a good dog. When he's being nonaggressive with children, give him treats. If he growls, barks, or lunges, make him sit immediately. Now if you know any children that could help, that would be good. Take the dog outside and off your property at first, and let him get used to the children. Have them talk to him. When he's ready, let them give him treats or pet him. When he finds out that children can give him treats, this will help his attitude a lot. Tell him how nice the kids are and how good he is. Also, if he likes toys, let a child play with the toy briefly, and then give it to the dog. You might have a certain toy the dog can have only when a child is around. Carry some treats with you when you go for a walk. Then if you think the dog is ready, you can let children give him treats or pet him. Basically this is the idea. Teach him that he loses freedom when he threatens kids, but he wins praise and treats when he doesn't. In fact, he gets more treats and fun when children are around. Of course you have to be careful around children. Your dog is right in thinking that a child could hurt him even by accident, being so big; so make sure that doesn't happen.

I've had my chihuahua since my son was 6 months old. My son is now 8 years old. The dog only snaps at my son if my son is aggie the dog. My son knows he's aggie the dog and does it for fun. Your chi is and will be young by the time your baby is born. When your child is 2/3 years old the child will have to learn not to bother the dog or the dog will bite.

Three things need to be done: 1) Proper training class. 2) Socialization with children 3) Proper exercise This is usually fear aggression. Many dogs who are not use to children are confused and fearful of the quick irregular movements they make. The don't smell like adults, they don't look like adults and they're unpredictable. Kudos to you for taking care of the situation. WAY to many people with small dogs think "she's small, he can't do any harm" and end up with wildly out of control dogs. It was put best to me by a rottie owner "If my dog behaved the way half the chihuahuas I see do, someone would be dead". Again, a pat on the back to you for being a good dog owner!

Yes, I have 3 children and a male chihuahua. Children are playful with the dog and he with them as well. I have not encountered any problems. Make sure your dog has all the vaccines to date and use preventive flea & tick protection to prevent any infestation. Chihuahuas by nature have sharp small teeth and children should be advised not to provoke the animal as to prevent bites. Good luck and congrats!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Lj

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

My mom has a miniature chihuahua and he was fine with my daughter but awful with my son. It depends on how the kid acts toward the dog. As long as they don't try to pull on, hit, or otherwise be mean to the dog, it should be fine!

Also, the dog would lay beside my belly while I was pregnant. My m-i-l had a pomeranian who wouldn't let me out of her sight while I was pregnant and she liked to lick my daughter's feet after she was born.

i think it depends on your dog. I have a chi and hes soooo good with babys. he understands that they are babies. he doesnt jump up on them or anything. but some chi's can be very bad with children. i read in chihuahuas for dummys that chi's shouldnt be with children under 8. So... i would bring your dog to visit with friends kids and babies and see the reaction there is... my pup is so good with all kids, i think its because he was around kids from a young age. ( the people we bought him from had kids)

My brother had a male chihuahua around his new born. He had him until his son was around 1 year and had no problems. He was protective. (He is lost)
