Sounds like the brake light switch to me.
It might not actually be a mechanical switch as most people have described... A lot of cars use a pressure switch in the hydraulic line to activate the brake lights, this is so that actual brake pressure switches on the lights, not the action of the pedal moving.

Best bet is to take it to a local (trusted) garage and ask them to have a look. Do it ASAP before someone runs into the back of you! In the meantime, as the rules of the highway code dictate, you should lower your window and wave your arm up and down outside the car to indicate to following cars that you are slowing down. Although, saying that, what are the chances that the driver behind actually recognises this signal????

You may have an earth problem/ This can be checked by a garage. Otherwise i have had something similar where the switch which activates the lights when the brake is pressed is faulty. Try this first it is located either underneath the brake peddle or above, Get someone to check the back of the car whilst you give it a fiddle, you may be able to hear a click when the switch engages but not always, If this is the problem and they do come on try a little WD40 otherwise the switch may need replacing, relatively easy if it is accessible, you should be able to pick one up quite cheep from halfords. Hope this helps

Renault Clio Break

the break lights work off a small microswitch which is activated by pressing the break peddle, (similar to the swich in your fridge that makes the light come on). You can fix the problem yourself (you will get dirty) there should be a swich touching the break peddle arm similar to the swich on the door frame that makes the interior light work, I suspect the switch needs a good clean or replacing. It is not an expensive job just a bit fiddly. Hope this helps.

It's probably the switch that is on the brake pedal.
If you don't know what to look for or how to test it then you'll need to take it to a garage.

I'd locate the switch, remove the connector then short it with a piece of wire and see if the lights work then. (bypass the switch).

If it's not that then you are into testing if the switch is getting a 12v feed.

PS. a good tip. don't press the brake and then get out to check the lights. Get someone to help you.

it could be 1 of 2 things....

1. renault build quality, i work for a car main dealer and have been told renault electrics are not the best quality in the world

or

2. behind the break pedal theres the break light switch, they tend to whear out with use and age, so i'd get that looked at before anything else

it may be the brake light swich! look right at thhe top of the pedal and there sould be a swich with a plug on it! take the plug off and stick a paper clip in the 2 wires and you should see ya lights on!dont forget to put the ignition on! if the lights come on then its the switch its self! if its a swichit will cost 5-10 pounds!

Sounds like the switch. Its not expensive. If you know some one who could fit it you could probably get one from the scrap yard for about £10/£15. Not sure on a garage price but won't be much

Most if not all cars have a small switch under the break pedal and it is this that is most likely at fault. They are reasonably easy to change.
