A completely random lottery system including all men AND women of draft age would be the most fair.

And since the current system requires young men to register for the draft, the registrations should be crossed checked against the SSN database - any one found not to have registered should automatically be drafted first, BEFORE those who complied with the system.

For those of you who say that women shouldn't be drafted - we, as a society, need to face the fact that women are as capable in combat as men (and in some fields, better), and that it is no worse to have your daughter come home in a body bag than it is your son.

Personally, I feel that every young person should be required to complete either a year of military service or 2 years of civil service like the Peace Corp, or Americorp between the ages of 18-25 - NO EXCEPTIONS. This would instill a sense of pride, independance and community in our young adults, as well as allieviate most of the need for a draft. This would be particularly helpful for those young brats who've always had mommy & daddy take care of them.

There is no fair military draft. The children of the rich will always have a choice, the poor will always have no choice.

Also, a draft might upset Bush's delicate charade. The war might start ruining too many lives. Right now, he can recycle armed forces personnel literally to death, and then say they chose to serve and die.

O, also, with a small military, Bush can throw more money away on pointless Cold War technology (F-22) and various other no-bid contracts.
