That's an absolute disgrace. I don't live in the USA so I don't know what the system is there, but you should definitely register a formal complaint and report him to the medical board.

Such comments are inappropriate, irrelevant, unprofessional and just from the point of basic human decency - downright rude.

In the meantime, as everyone else has said - find yourself another doctor. That man is a disgrace to his profession.

To answer your exact question, most doctors (I KNOW from personal experience) would never, ever speak to a patient in that way, indeed most would never even THINK like that. Unfortunately as in every job there will always be a few who give the rest a bad name. I've come across bad, impolite doctors before (impolite / brusque is not uncommon) - but outright insulting and offensive is very unusual...

I know what you feel to some extent. I was well over 300 pounds, well lets face it I was 400 pounds and when I would visit my doctor, he would say, you need to loose weight. I would look at him like what else is new. Finally one time he did that and I turned it back on him. I put on my big eyes, drew in my breath, put my hand up to my mouth like I was in shock, then said "really, now what you gone do bout it, that's why I pay you, so you need to do your job". It made him look at it a different way because that forced him to take ownership in our failure to loose the weight. I only saw him once more after that but I felt a lot better. You should stand up for yourself and your child then find you another physician.

Because doctors are people and people do stupid things?

I mean, no doctor should be saying such things to you and your daughter, but the question "Why do doctors make stupid remarks" is like asking why lawyers or teachers or the bag lady walking down the street make stupid remarks. They are all people, and all people do stupid stuff.

Change docs and if he works at a hospital, go to the Medical Director, if in a clinic go to the head of the clinic. These remarks are hurtful and harmful to the patients. Speak up for your daughter's sake.

Go turn him into member services. That isn't acceptable. I have A LOT of problems with doctors, and I turned one into member services. They take things like that VERY seriously.
I think it is rare to find a good respectable doctor these days. What is the world coming to?

Because I have worked with a ton of them for more than 12 years and most of them are socially inept. They can't help it, only one side of their brain is working.
