It depends on the phone you have. Call up your provider and explain to them why you need to have it unlocked (going oversees, etc.) and they will probably help you, or at least direct you to the manufacturer's support line so they can help you.

You have three options -
1 - You can go to a local store and ask them to unlock it. Some will, some won't.

2 - You can do a search on Google ("cellular" "unlock codes") and it will provide sites for free tools, and

3 - for fee tools.

You should not have to pay to get it unlocked.

There are some unofficial tool that allow you to unlock certains phone. You would have to search it by the model. Haven't tried it but it can be a life savior for some people.

you have to actually call your provider. they can help you. or just go to one of their stores.
