Just the same as a regular pastor. It's just a temporary assignment.

In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) the Sr. pastor is the head of staff. The interim is the Head of Staff between permanent pastors (in the interim).

When a beloved pastor leaves, he/she often leaves big shoes to fill. No matter how well the new pastor serves a church, there are people who hold that pastor up against the pastor that left.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) provides an interim pastor to serve for 7 - 12 months (not a concrete figure) while the church looks for a new permanent paster. It also provides a buffer between pastors to avoid this conflict.
