Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease. Pred is a corticosteroid and corticosteroids inhibit the inflammatory process (a part of the immune response). Methotrexate is an antineoplastic but also binds to dihydrofolate reductase and thus blocks the reduction of folic acid to tetrahydrofolate, a cofactor needed for prurine synthesis. Purines are nitrogenous compounds that are the end products of protein metabolism. Prurines can deposit in joints causing inflammation, as with gouty arthritis. And that's how prednisone (no capital P) and Methotraxate work.

Prednisone is antiinflammatory so reduces the inflammation in the joints and in the body and methotrexate alters the metabolism of the inflammatory cells, too, take folic acid with methotrexate and stick to regular monitoring labs while taking these, good luck

They both supress the immune system but watch the side effects of long term prednisone usage include cortisone psychosis so if people start telling you that you are acting wierd after you are on it for a while go immediately to the doctor. I have MCTD which causes so much pain without my steroids but I have had the psychosis once and did not know how crazy i was being but I almost killed myself because of the depression I still use prednisone but we watch my mental health more. It is not uncommon so my doctor tells me. But I could not take the symptoms of my disease without it.
