In which European country is the cost of living the lowest?

I am especially interested in Italy, Germany, Sweden and Norway

Bulgaria at the moment is pretty cheap. But as each European country joins the EU the cost of living goes up (Bulgaria is about to become a member). Between Germany, Sweden and Norway, Germany is currently the cheapest to live in, but as the rate of VAT is going up 3% in January this is likely to change. Sob!

Parts of Germany - Berlin is really cheap and salaries are decent, while Frankfurt, for example, is really expencive city. Italy is not that expencive, also Sweden is probably cheaper than other Scandinavian countries. Norway is the most expencive country in Europe - but again, standard of living in all of Scandinavia is so high that if you have a job, prices don't affect you much. Probably the cheapest place would be Portugal - it's dead cheap, but salaries are very low too.

In general, the farther north, the more expensive, the farther south, the cheaper the costs of living.

None of those are cheap. Try Montenegro or Serbia or the Republic of Macedonia.

Scandinavian countries are especially expensive, taxes are very high. But life is good and generous there.
