Mixing acrylic paint with water makes blending more difficult instead of easier - water actually makes the paint dry faster. Don't add oil, the two do not mix.

Blending is much easier when you add a bit of acrylic medium or glazing medium - made of the same binders used in the paint itself.

Glazing medium has retarder added to slow the drying to give you more time to work with the paint before it dries.

Have fun!

Acrylics can be incredebly hard to blend together I suggest watering everything down and blending it all together wirh your fingers. Then go over it a number of times and just build up your painting. Paint brushes can leave a lot of strokes that you may not want to see. you can apply your paint with them and smooth it out and then blend the colors together using your fingers. Keep your fingers wet. Try working on cardboard with acrylics to help you work faster and come up with ways to blend it smoothly. Its great practice. The carboard absorbs the water from the paint much faster and the paint drys very very quickly. If you don like having to work fast you should try oils although the negative with oils is that it takes an incredibly long time to dry and you can blend so much that the colors turn to mush.

My prefered way is the "dirty brush" or wet-on-wet method. I have my background color in my brush, and pick up just a corner of it in the new color and add it to my background color. If the base color is still wet, you will get a soft blend of the two colors. Even if it dries, by having the basecoat color in your brush, and just part of it full of the new color, you will get a softer blend of the two together. Sometimes its just a lot of experience and practice to find out what works best for you.

You do have to work faster with acrylics than with oils, but there are mediums you can buy to slow the dry time, smooth the texture, etc. They work pretty well.
