trying to run recovery console from XP CD, lost all my boot.ini file, etc, can still get online, my desktop is gone and all my program icons from start up

Of course you can boot from cd. a cd boot bypasses your HDD entirely. Run a repair installation rather than recovery console.

Trying to reinstall windows i presume? Make sure yur cd rom is part of the boot sequence. Go to the bios. May say press F2 or dell for setup. In the bios, the first topic or 2, look for boot sequence. Now most likely yur boot sequence is Floppy then C or C drive den other hardware. Pur CDROM first then Hard drive. Save and then restart but this time make sure u have yur XP cd in yur cd rom drive and it will boot. Follow the instructions. Another thing, during the setup and the computer restarts, do not press any key to boot from the cd cause u will go back to stage one unless the setup gave u instructions to do so before restarting yet leave the CD in the drive so when u go to stage 2, it will continue to run from the CD. power off the pc remove the power cabel

get you back in to your windows xp user account if you forget you user
account password

TO GET BACK IN TO YOUR USER ACCOUNT DESKTOP
if you dont have a user COMPUTER ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT USER ID
shut down the computer remove the power cable
take the computer cover off
now look in side the computer
next to the computer motherboard or nxt to it

there is a silver battery it is a silver clip silver battery
you remove the silver battery wait for 1 minute .. 1 minute not 30 seconds you must keep the silver battery off for 1 minute then you put the silver battery back on then you put the cover back on the computer then you put the power cable back on the power point at the back of the computer then you restart your computer
and you will come back to the user account login screen click on your user account and windows xp will login with out asking for the user account password then you click on start /control panel click on user account icon ... then you click on your user account icon and creat a new password ..windows xp with all your settings
windows xp with all your settings will be as they was befor you lost your password all your desktop settings and files will still be there ...then restart your pc for settings to be saved... no need to format the hard drive at all

Try a blank password...that sometimes works. If you got your PC from a manufacturer like Dell, Gateway, etc, you might have to call them to get the password.
