Use a razor to gently scrape the excess off the wall. Then use a damp cloth heated in the microwave. Use rubber gloves to be able to handle the cloth, compress it against the waill to remove the wax residue. DO NOT RUB. It will come off clean as a whistle and will not damage the paint.

I don't know about paint but if it won't just peel off or chip off allow me to suggest this. On a show I saw a lady take a damp paper towel and put it over the wax and put an iron on it (low temp) and slowly rub around the damp paper towel, lift it up and it was on the towel. They did it on a rug but maybe it will work for you.

Freezing cold water, or rub it w/ an ice cube. It will become brittle and break off.
