Crate training is used for many reasons. 1. dogs normally will not go to the bathroom where they sleep, so by crating your dog (in a cage) while your gone or at night helps "house break" your dog. 2.Crateing your puppy while he/she is small saves on not destroying your house while you are gone or at bedtime. You should only use a crate for specific house behaviors. You shouldn't keep your dog crated all of the time. When you are home he/she should be out to roam freely so you can continue your training in a positive nature. If you crate your dog while you are gone make sure that he is taken for a walk and allowed to excise daily. If you don't you will end up with unwanted behaviors. Ask your vet if crating is good for your dog and the best way to go about crating. Hope this helps you!

Crate training is where you put your dog in a crate when you are sleeping or out because they won't go to the bathroom where they sleep. It also prevents them from tearing up your house. I don't use this method because I won't want to be cramped up in a cage for up to 16 hours per day (8 hours while your at work and 8 hours at night). However, some vets recommend it to keep them safe. I put up a child's gate to keep my German Shepard in the kichen when I was out for a long period of time with his papers. I did not cage my Chow at all and she went outside a lot faster then my German Shepard. I think it is important to remember to puppy proof your house (most vets give you a puppy guide that will tell you how) and make sure the dog gets out enough. I think the best way to train is to take them outside often and praise them when they go (they also need to be taken outside after they eat because the food puts pressure on their bladder). If they go in the house, just clean it up and move on; it is the cost of having a puppy. If you catch them going give them a firm NO and put them outside. Both my puppy were fully trained by about 6 weeks old.

However, if you do think crate training is right for you please think about how long you leave them in the cage at a time. Puppies need lots of exercise and attention to be good dogs. There are many training books and videos if you don't have time or money to send them to training. Your puppy will grow up to whatever you put into him now, so do it right!

Crate training is one of the best things you can do for your dog. Their kennel is their room. They should see it as a safe place (positive) and should never be used as a place for punishment (negative). It is a place they can go when they don't want to interact with the family, and makes them feel secure when you are away. If properly trained, dogs see their crate as a safe haven and resting place. even if they are in unfamiliar surroundings.

You put your dog in a crate while you're away, or during the night so that they don't pee or poop in the house, or tear up the furniture. They won't urinate inside the crate because they don't want to soil their bedding.
Your dog's crate can also become its den, and it will go there when it's upset. I highly recommend crates, but I also recommend letting your dog out of it whenever you are home and awake.

It begins as a way to help house break the pup, when in bed or you are not home....most pup will not go to the bathroom where they sleep. This will help them learn to "hold it". As they become older the crate can develope into a safe place or "den" as I read in another answer. Some people even use them as a form of punishment, which I do not recommend. If you do that, the dog will not like it, which completly eliminate the point for having it....they have to stay a place where your dog feel comfortable.

We agree with the bitt bull owner!!!
I work with greyhounds who are crated from puppy to adulthood. Even after retirement they adore their crate - it's there safe place. Mine and friends as well

All behavior aspects they stated are correct, and working with a Rescue Group for greyhounds. I see this everyday

Good job pitt bull! Greys and pitts make awesome friends - I help save them as well in San Diego

its putting your dog (usually a puppy) in a small area or crate so they learn how to go to the bathroom. ive heard of either leaving the puppy in a very small crate so they wont want to go to the bathroom and learn to hold it, or putting them in a crate with more room and some newpaper or puppy pads so they learn to go on the the paper.
