There are four main types of lung cancer based on the histological appearance of the cancer cells:

1) small cell carcinoma (20% of cases)
2) large cell carcinoma (10% of cases)
3) squamous cell carcinoma (25% of cases)
4) adenocarcinoma (30% of cases)

Collectively, the latter three types are referred to as non-small cell lung cancer
