The same reason people make fun of someones death.... they don't get it.....

People make fun of anything that is out of their scope of what normal should be, to them. And as a society that is made okay, pick on the fat people, pick on the mentally ill people, that's okay. In the media mental illness only gets mention when someone gets hurt or something tragic happens. Bad stigmas attached to mentally ill.

Plus, we are sort of funny.

Because they are ignorant, insecure or just plain mean. People fear what they don't understand. The stigma of mental illnesses in the country is really bad. We all need to do something about it... get it out in the open. Depression affects millions of people and is truely dibilitating. It's sad that we are made to feel shameful for getting help. I have several mental illnesses, and the vast majority of people in my life don't understand. It's hard :(

because if you are a weak and spineless jerk you have to find someone to lord it over who you think is worse off than you. Look at some of your answers and you will see who I mean. The main reason is fear, people are afraid of what they don't understand and the media has demonised, without any justification, people who are 'mad and bad' for a hundred years. Anyone who is ill should feel sorry for those who are not; reason; they are part of the group in society 40 times more likely than you to kill, maim, abuse others, steal and generally behave amorally. the mentally ill group are more likely to harm themselves than anyone else and include most of the greatest geniuses who ever lived, in every field of human endeavour. Pity the rest

Only the spiritually ill make fun of others. Which do you believe would be worse? Spiritual illness or mental illness? Feel compassion for those who are spiritually lacking.

Ignorance. They either don't know anyone who suffers or from mental illness or don't have it themselves. The world would be a much better place if people were more compassionate and not so judgemental.

They don't understand that (the fun maker) have short comings of their own,and try to draw attention to the mentally ill person to extract it from theirselves.

Perhaps another form of mental illness.

Because sometimes the stuff they do is just funny. I don't mean to sound cruel; I have worked with the mentally handicapped. To laugh with them (not AT them) sometimes IS appropriate and helps them to feel more "normal."

The problem is that all the awareness raising campaigns and other stuff only help ppl with very obvious and big dissabilities e.g. retards , blinds , deafs , ..... but those who really suffer are the ones with more complex and inobvious problems like ADHD , dyslexia.
