The ones that went outside into the sun and saw the world for how it really was and now how the shadows on the wall appeared to? Then they go back in the cave and try and convince those who have become so comfortable staring at those shadows that they refuse to follow them outside into the actual sunlight?

If you don't know what I mean you should read Plato's Allegory of a Cave.

That's exactly what we are. The analogy is entirely valid.

Some atheists. Though Plato wasn't an atheist himself. I think he was pointing more to the fact that philosophers in his time were pulling away from religious trappings. Not so much that they were pulling away from belief in a Higher Power (The word Logos and it's meaning "Word of God" did come from Plato - not Christianity - Hellenism at it's finest), but getting out of the rather large piles of BS that was coming from the religions in Rome and the surrounding areas.

I like the metaphore, but I would say it is the Christians who have stopped looking at the shadows in the cave. It seems to me that they are the ones who refuse to accept the evidence of their senses.

Wow, I love this question. That does seem a lot like Atheists. But some people will always prefer to just stare at the shadows.

I believe in God and would also like to think that I have ventured out of the cave. It does not have to be one or the other.

Once again, we can debate this till the cows come home, but Only when you stand before God (or not) will you really know the answer.I believe that God does exist and would like us to use all of our reasoning abilities to see that for ourselves before judgement day.

Yes, that is in fact what we are. And the complexity and richness of your analogy sheds light on the true nature of my fallacy. Well done.
