I realize that using using abbreviations and eliminating capitalization may be quicker, but am I the only one who can spell? Is it really that difficult for people to use words in context or use the proper form of "to"? I'm just saying it seems like these forums invite morons to butcher the English language, for example: using "don't" instead of "doesn't" as in: It doesn't work to use the word "don't" in the first half of this sentence. I'm not trying to be a jerk but I find this annoying. I'm sure I'm going to receive several angry responses to this, but I'm sure I won't be bothered by them since I won't understand what the writer is trying to convey. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I make mistakes too (proper form used in place of "as well" or "also") This isn't directed at the occasional mispelling or impoper use of grammar. All I'm asking is for people is to at least try to use written language correctly.

I think that problem exists partly because of text messaging, actually. Typing on your cell phone can be really annoying and time consuming, so on there it makes sense to use abbreviations like "u" in place of "you." But people don't understand that that kind of talk should be kept to cell phones, and that there's no reason to type like that using a keyboard.

I agree with what you're saying, though. I think the biggest problem with typing like that on the computer is that it gives you the impression that the writer is stupid, even though that might not be the case at all. That kind of typing can really affect how you take in what you read on here. A brilliant essay can be thrown off completely if the writer uses "their" in place of "there" twenty times.

i wish that it could be better also. Text messaging and Instant messengers have really bastardized the English language. Kids and young adults use it and never really learn that the form is inappropriate for use anywhere else.
I realize that it saves time, but it is very annoying to someone who was raised before cell phones and technology started destroying language.

i'm a form of perfectionist and that's amazingly annoying! yet i wager that's optimal (to a point) over MSN or different instant messaging facilities to maintain time, yet people do not have any excuse for undesirable spelling (till that's a perplexing/lengthy word, yet then there is continuously spell examine) till for sure they're studying english as a 2d language or they're ordinary stupid.

Wow. I was actually thinking of posting something like this. It does bother me. I can take some stuff (not much, but some), but what really bothers me is when people continually mis-use the "your" vs "you're" and that kind of thing. It's totally understandable that you would make such a request.

Are you an English teacher? It bothers me too especially when spell check is right here to use. Unfortunately, the writing you see here is what English teachers see on essays. Very sad!

I realise what you mean. I also find it annoying in speech and English. However on the computer (Yahoo, MSN etc) I don't mind the odd abbreviations and spelling errors. Actually, I think I'm rubbish at spelling so I guess I can't really talk.

(Tried my best and, as far as I know, I made no mistakes in the paragraph above.)
