I have two male cats. 1 is 3 yrs. old and the other is 14. I just got a puppy. he is now 6 months old. He chases the younger cat. The older cat just hisses and stays put as he is the king of the house and the puppy doesn't bother him. The younger cat runs til he jumps up on something or just plays dead on the floor. It's so funny! How do i get the cats used to the puppy? Also, how do i keep the dog from chewing on things? The dog is in the kitchen that is blocked off with his bedding, food and litter. All of his things are there and he is happy but i can't keep doing this for long and keeping him penned up. I want a harmonious household of animals! Anyone with similar experiences, please help!! Thanks!!

It sounds like your pets are working things out quite nicely for themselves. The puppy doesn't bother the older cat and seems to play with the younger one. If they're having fun, relax! If anything serious was developing your younger cat wouldn't be playing dead on the floor.

As for the chewing, he's a teething puppy and will outgrow it. But for now, his gums are sore and he needs a variety of things he can chew on. Try wetting and freezing an old wash cloth, then give him that. It's soothing to sore gums. You shouldn't have to keep him penned up when you can be with him to keep an eye on him. He needs to learn what "no" means now, so use it to teach him what he can't chew on.

Until they are used to each other it is safer to keep them separate when you are not there. Personally I would trim the cat's claws so that they can't scratch the puppy's eyes if he becomes too inquisitive. When they are introduced keep the puppy on a loose but long lead so that you can grab it quick and check him if you need to. Always make sure the cat's have somewhere to escape - this will make them less nervous around the dog. A water pistol is usefull for stopping the cats doing something they shouldn't and a can filled with stones that you can shake or drop serves as a good diversion for adverse puppy behaviour. Perserverance is the key here. The long lead that you can can check when the puppy starts to chew is useful too - say "NO" firmly first, and then pull the lead. Alternatively use the can of stones to interrupt the chewing. Start off with all the animals together for short spells, and gradually increase the length of time together. Train the puppy to sit on command and reward him, that way he will sit at your request rather than pester the cats.

After the puppy and cats have been around each other for a while they will settle in and accept each other. The cats a probably hoping that the dog isn't permanant. When they see he isn't going away they will settle down.the chewwing is a puppy thing he will out grow that. Make sure he has plenty of chew toys and really it doesn't hurt him to be gated in until he out grows the chewing.

Cats and dogs are organic acquaintances. It look you're previous the perplexing section already (the intro level the position you need to shop them separate and monitored even as you gently introduce and let them get acquainted with each and every others heady scent). Now that's extremely important that you do not intervene and let them envision there residing mission. i imagine you'd be delighted to work out that the lunging finished through your dogs and taunting of your cats will connect their playing ordinary for years yet to go back. (Take this from a woman who sits right here including her ninety lb Doberman and four lb cat cuddled jointly, the cat likes to placed her entire head contained in the dogs's mouth and then hangs off his nostril.....for relaxing!) you do not have to any extent further some thing to rigidity about, basically shop a digital camera reachable for each of the finished photo ops.

My dog used to chase my cat too. Now they pretend that they don't like eachother, but if you come home quietly while they're sleeping, you can sometimes catch them cuddling. As for the puppy chewing on things, make sure you have tons of raw hide chews and you can buy bitter apple spray to make them not chew (this didn't work with my dog, he chewed the bottle... go figure).
