Hello Everyone,

I am trying to install McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 on my Windows XP machine. Each time I get an error saying it can't install because of Norton Rescue Disk and Norton Antivirus 2002 Professional Edition.

I have never installed these items so they must have come with this computer (Dell Dimension). I uninstalled everything I could but am still getting the error.

Here is what I have done so far:

*Uninstalled Norton
*Went to the Norton website and used the removal tool to get rid of anything Norton leaves behind.
*Removed all Norton/Symantec folders and files.
*Went into the Regedit and got rid of everything Norton/Symantec
*Also tried booting into Safe Mode to get rid of everything.
*ran all my spyware products.
*Went to the McAfee help site and they cant' help me because it is a Norton product.
*Went to Norton and they don't have anything relating to products from 2002.

So, how on EARTH do I get rid of this? I want to install my software.

Much much thanks in advance.

I really need to get rid of this program. Also, I can not reinstall XP because it didn't come with this Dell.

Norton antispyware or Nortons antivirus is pure junk for many years and keeps getting worse each an every year. When you remove Nortons from add/remove plus also perform all that task that you have listed, Nortons still leaves hidden/glued to your files over 300 fragments. The hidden one are the worse being they are hidden in your system. (Nortons in my opinion knows that their sofware is garbage, so the punish you when you think you have removed their program). The 300 plus fragments cause conflict with all new antivirus system you try an install.

I had this problem nine years ago plus just one month ago when I told my computer engineer that I use http://www.filseclab.com From Beijing, China. An antivirus system used by the Government of China. He did not listen an installed Nortons Security Suite. It took me days to find all of the hidden fragments so I could install my own antivirus system.

This program is not free, but if you are smart during the evaluation period you can use it to remove all the fragments left behind by Nortons. Atleast enough where there will not be any conflict with McAfee, I hope.

Go to: http://www.rosecitysoftware.com And download their "Registry First Aid", program.

After you install this program, run "Check Registry For Errors". First it will create a backup of your registry. Then it will scan your registry for errors and registry keys with no value.

You will see check marks next to green box, yellow box and red box. If you consider yourself an expert delete all, including the red box as you will have a backup.

(Any problem just go to start-search=files, and type in "backups", your pc will scan and you will get "rfa backups", open and you can either delete or restore the keys that were removed).

Next with the same program, use, "Search The Registry", now you type in at the top"symantec" and "nortons", then click on add and scan. After the scan you should see I hope all the hidden Nortons show. Left click with your mouse over each entry and use the arrow on the right side off the entry to drop down and to where it will allow you to cut string associated with this registry key. (No problems as you also get a backup).

Cut the registry string on every program related to Nortons. After you complete this then reboot your system and then try an install Mcafee again.

I used Registry First Aid for many many years an I know the owner. Can assure you that never in over nine years has one registry good registry key been removed by error.

Trusted program. Actually one of the very best registry fixer software out there.

Hope this helps you.

Please excuse my english.

Norton sucks. It NEVER really uninstalls right.

You did pretty much everything I know to do to manually uninstall it. You also didn't say rather you got rid of Live Update. It is part of the package.

One other thing Start>Run>services.msc. See if there are any Symantec or Norton services hanging around. Go properities and disable them if there are and delete the executables they point to. Restart after disable and they should come off the list.

Yes but McAfee and Norton aren't as good at clearing Spyware. Try either Trend Micro Internet Security or Microsoft Live One Care, both come with a 90 day trial and both do a great job against Spyware...

If yout got your computer directly from dell, I'd notify them and let them know what is going on. Also microsoft has free support. you can contact them about the issue. Seemings how it says Nortan is from 2002 I don't know if either nortan or symantec will support this issue. As a previous poster said there is a program for nortan/symantec called live update that needs to be removed seperately. Aslo services might still be enabled on your pc for symantec/nortan even though it is removed...

There are several other programs with symantic names that must be removed in addition to Norton. Unless you know that Symantic owns Norton, you do not know you need to uninstall these programs, which is how Symantic likes it.
