Actually this is a semi-serious inquiry. AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) uses God as a means to stay sober. Do they go to these meetings then? Or just remain drunken sods?

Most of the atheists are forced into going to AA meetings by the court system. They are forced to believe in a higher power and to call that higher power god. They are forced to pray and be spiritual.

Someone already pointed out that AA has the same success rate as people who quit on their own. AA has a higher death rate, than those who quit on their own.

I am not atheist but I nearly died in AA due to their spiritual indoctrination. There is a high anti medication faction in AA and some sponsors tell their people that if they take any medication they are not sober.

God is a good pacifier for immature people unable to control their impulses, and inebriated alcoholics fall into this category.

I would suggest that anyone drunk enough to need AA probably is susceptible to the silliness of the God message used there to try to instill a little self-discipline in the people who attend.

Anyone who believes that this life is all they get isn't likely to waste much of their precious time lolling about in a drunken stupor, even if naturally prone to alcohol abuse.

This Atheist found the strength to avoid alcohol inside of himself, and did not need the crutch of religion.

Twas pretty easy too. I simply looked deep inside myself and sought answers to why I behaved the way I did. When I realized that it had to do with the fact that I was raised by an alcoholic mother, I decided maybe drinking wasnt a good idea.

If I ever became a drunk I think I'd just OD before enrolling in AA. I have tons of clients in AA and it seems like the most cornball crap on the face of the earth. This is in no way a knock in spirituality, I just think they manage to take all the beauty out of it. That being said, if it annoys the crap out of me, I can only imagine it's that much worst for athiests. You know they're all snooty anyway.

You are inferring that all atheists are drunken sods, shame on you,you will be smitten or something.I'm an atheist and dont go to AA because there is no need as I dont drink.

Actually the AA uses 'higher power' which they are quite happy to tell you that you can decide for yourself what that is. Everybody gets embarrassed when some Born-Again-Holy-Roller starts ranting about getting down on our knees. It is obvious that the best part of their minds are gone.

I'm an atheist who was arrested on a DUI charge back in college. My probation officer actually forced me to go to AA classes. After class I would encourage the other drunks to go have drink. What? It's not like I was afraid of going to hell.

My guess would be that an alcoholic atheist typically would have the cajones to get his own life back on track without the need to be part of a flock.

AA has been scientifically proven to be worthless. The recovery rate is the same as people who don't go. The D.A.R.E. program for children actually slightly increases the probability they will use drugs.
