I have a 4 year old daughter and a 1 1/2 year old son. This is the first Christmas EVER that I am stumped on what to start shopping for. They have so much stuff! Of course, I would like to get them toys because 1) That's what Christmas is for, for kids... and 2) because they're learning and interests are expanding. My daughter was into Barbies, doll houses, pretend play, dress-up... I just don't know if they get boring to her...
My son, I just don't know.
Please, interesting answers... I'm the type of person to buy for learning, the sake of enjoyment and what you get get for the money. I don't buy just because they need gifts.

daughter is old enough for some messy toys like painting a window catcher for her room. Clay ,chalk board easel, learning books, theres a great number of computerized toys for teaching that are great fun for children.
A interactive baby doll-like baby Amanda or baby Alive.
My personal experience is if she like pretending then give her things to expand that-a doctor once told me that the imagination in a child is a very healthy thing that leads to a great interest in learning. How about a kitchen set with alot of fake food. She can cook for her dolls.
My little pet shop offers a wide variety of pretend pets and they learn about caring for pets and barbie will share in this as she can bring one toy to the next for more creative playing.
For your son something that goes zoom -like a car that makes wonderful noises,Thomas has a wonderful trian and cartoon, dump trucks and road graders, hot wheels and racing tracks, robots, and a doodle pad, crayons and coloring books.

I work for Hasbro...I will give you a few of different links with great toys one is only Hasbro Toys. I see a lot of toys while in stores, so I totally understand what you mean. You son would love the Itty Bitty Spiderman - he sings and moves his hands. Weebles are hot this year for his age this year....For her...Littlest Petshop, TJ Berrytales, My Little Pony.
They have some really neat things out this year for Play-Doh as stocking stuffers.
This was an after thought. I was in Wal-Mart and Target, I was told that the new Elmo won't be shipped like the last one in large quantities - 2 to 3 cases at a time and the stores are not going to reserve them. I like parents to know that info that the stores won't tell to customers. They don't tell so it can help drive the sells up. If you can't find toy X you will purchase toy Y and Z. I don't say that cause it isn't one of our items, I tell you because I remember what it was like to search like a mad woman for that one item for my kids.

Get them bigger toys. Yes, they're more expensive, but they don't seem to get thrown into the toybox as quickly.

For your daughter, how about a play kitchen? She would probably love making breakfast for her baby dolls (at least the 4 yr. olds that I know do). One of those bouncy ride on horses were alot of fun when I was that age (of course the ones they make now are alot better!).

For your son, anything "ride on" is always great. A wagon, a ride on tractor, a rocking horse are always alot of fun for kids at that age. Get him a tent. Little boys for some reason love making forts and hideouts. He would probably love having a small tent to hide in from his big sister.

My advice is always stay away from outdoor toys at Christmas. It's no fun to get a bike when you can't even go outside and ride it the day you get it because it's so cold out. Things that are meant for outside use aren't a good idea that time of the year. Also, things with little parts are the worst. One little piece gets lost and the whole toy ends up at the bottom of the toy box because that one little piece is gone and it ruins the whole toy.

The new Leap Frog Little Leaps game system is great for kids your son's age. It actually is intended for children 9 months to 36 months. There are 4 games (and each game disc has about 6 or 7 individual games on it) available right now. You can get them at discount stores like Wal-Mart or Target. We bought one for my 2 year old daughter a few months ago and she LOVES it. The game we got her works with shapes, numbers, counting, the alphabet, phonics and different languages. I'm a big fan of it.

I'm asking for my toddler daughter for christmas... Subscriptions to book clubs (The gift that keeps on giving). Also last year my dad got her 2 gift certificates to Stride Rite (an expensive shoe store) which was really nice so i'm going to ask for that again this year for her. And disney movies. I want her to have the whole collection.

I plan on getting her a few toys (already got her the TMX Elmo because shes Elmo obsessed) but my big gift will be a table and chairs for her room. They will work for her for a few years and shes been eyeing them when we go to teh store (She will sit at the tables and put this HUGE grin on like look how cute i am mommy!).

Best of luck!

Buy stuff from leap frog or Dora the Explorer. They have all of the learning yet games for your daughter and toys for your son. They have one' s for the computer or T.V. They start to get pricey if you really want to buy them the advanced stuff but it's worth it. It will help them learn a lot faster. Go to the mall they have all of that. Or any baby store.

Sincerely yours,
Laurie

The toys you describe for your daughter seem fine enough as they make her mind active with role play and imagination, i ask her what she would like and get your ideas this way its what i have done with my daughter who will be 4 in november she is into disney princess cinderella at the moment so thats the them i will go along for this year dressing up clothes and dolls and jigsawa etc as for your son he will be happy with cuddly toys that talk as this will help encourage his speech and big chunky jigsaws that he can just push into place big toy cars he can push around.

They have interactive games and even preschool type basic
computer toys to enhance learning experiences and prepare your 4 year old. The little guy just gets noise makers and toys, and when he takes them out of the box, he plays with the box..

Well your 1 1/2 year old is getting too old for his crib and will be grown soon... lol.
So get rid of his crib set, or car bed.... And redo his room for him.
As for your daughter.
Get her a playhouse for outside... Run electricity to it and put a small sink in there for her.
She will be so popular after that!!! LOL!
=0)
Just an idea..... Hey..... Hope this helps.
♥
Best wishes!
