I seem to be one of a dying race of teens that actually type out their words. I know most people who use chatspeak are perfectly nice in real life, but I wish they'd make the effort and learn to spell. Are our standards of literacy falling? What can we do?

Sorry if this applies to you. It's just annoying, is all.

Hello Hannah...

I agree with you completely. First of all it would take me much longer to figure out which 'chatspeak' characters to use, I am a fast typist and it's much easier for me to just type as I think!

Second, I often spend more time deciphering a cryptic question than actually answering it. Sometimes I just give up and go on to the next one. I don't know why kids think it's so cool to make English difficult to read. They should get a job in cryptology or something!

And never mind trying to get them to use a spell checker - half their words would be flagged as wrong anyway!

Well, if you want to criticize other people's use of language (spelling issues or otherwise), you might want to use proper grammar and spelling in your own writing. Here is how your question should read:

Doesn't anyone type properly anymore?

I seem to be one of a dying race of teens WHO actually type(S) out HER words. I know most people who use chatspeak are perfectly nice in real life, but I wish they'd make the effort AND LEARN to spell. Are our standards of literacy falling? What can we do?

Sorry(,) if this applies to you. It's just annoying. (delete [, is all]).

Oh, be still my heart! Someone else who finds this internet shorthand irritating! There are those who just don't know how to spell and find these silly abbreviations easier than learning how to spell. There are also those who think that it makes them look like they are part of the "in" crowd, as well as those that think it is fashionable, cool and makes them unique. Finally, there are those whose typing abilities are limited and think that as long as we can decipher what they say, it doesn't matter if they appear ignorant and uncaring of whether their message is understood or not. I don't know what we can do about it, but I do know that I will often refuse to answer a question couched in total chatspeak. They probably aren't able to understand my brand of language anyway!

This is another symptom of the dumbing down and the return to the dark ages that those in power want, they don't want anyone
to be able to read and understand the laws and decrees that they will be passing, all they want is what the religious and secular leaders of the dark ages wanted, that is a servile uneducated populace who can barely make a mark on a piece of paper and agree to everything they say and do. The way things are going there will only be a small minority of people who will be able to understand any language not just English as it is supposed to be.

No, because people are getting lazy. This all started with the invention of text messaging, and has gone waaaaayyyyyy too far. I told a girl on here the other day that I couldn't be bothered to read her question which was really long, and written in text talk. It took me ages to figure it out. I am not old either - only 26. My advice to you all is "2 pak it in nw plz cuz itz so anoyin wen u av 2 read n e fin rittn like this innit?"

It's stupid...I think they should use that language and spelling for IM's but not so other people have to figure out what the heck they are talking about. The word "to" has only one more letter than 2...what's the point? Seems to me that it would be harder to figure out how to abbreviate something than to type the real word.

i find it funny how everyone who types questions regarding grammer or spelling gets it wrong themselves.'no-one' should be 'no one' and the tag question 'is all' is grammatically incorrect. However, you do seem like a nice girl so i'm not trying to put you down. We can spell and use proper grammer but we prefer not to when we're not being assed on it. Chill out no one (spelt correctly!) will judge you if you lower your standard of english just to type on Yahoo! : )

look, I'm a Spanish native speaker but, I like to answer questions here for practicing, and I've seen mistakes that even I wouldn't do, that's terrible but, that happens in my culture too, people don't seem to care if they wrote things in the wrong way, I'm a teen too and I think the same exact way U do, it's really annoying, people should read more and they need to know that bad spelling makes them look ignorant.

sorry if I wrote something wrong, Im learning.

I think that if you are on messnger or something like that, then it's way easier to shorten the words because it takes time. It's not about knowing how to spell or anything like that because I'm very educated but on these sites there's no need to write out all these words. There's a reason why someone came up with "slang"
They were definitely thinking about us................

I agree, while my form for typing is terrible, I try to type out whole words with as little abreviation as possible. Our standards are falling and we need to make sure we teach the next generation to avoid textual slacking off.
