It depends on the cats....you'll have to wait and see. I have 3 cats and they all share the same one. Just for the record I am not a crazy old cat lady...yet.

Yes, you should have a separate litter box for your new cat. Experts say you should have 1.5 boxes for each cat in your household. I've raised cats in pairs my whole life (two at a time) and have always had two litter boxes. I recently adopted 3 cats, and we have 4 boxes for them. Sure, it is a bit more work to keep up with them, but it gives your cats some privacy and keeps them from doing their business in non-litter box areas (if you know what I mean). We've never had an accident with 3 cats in the house.

The standard rule is to have one litter box for each cat, and then add one more. So, if you're going to have two cats, you should have three litter boxes.
You should also consider the personality of your cats. When introducing a new cat, especially if you are getting a kitten, you need to keep them seperated for awhile--which means you'll definately need a seperate litter box, and seperate food and water dishes. It took 6 weeks for my 3 year old cat to get used to my new kitten, but every cat is different.
Some cats even need two litterboxes each. One to do #1, and one to do #2. Again, it all depends on the personality of your cats.

You don't have to have separate litter trays, but I find it is easier on them, and me, to have two. My two cats pee in one and poop in the other. It makes scooping a lot easier and the boxes stay cleaner. I dump all the litter once a week, (the evening before trash p/u day) and wash the two litter pans. Having one pan means more stuff sticking to the bottom of the pan. With two pans, the cleanup is sooo much easier. Hardly anything has accumlated to the point where it is sticking to the bottom. However, I do scoop out the poop everyday. Things just smell nicer that way.

Best to you and your maybe new cat.

A lot of Vets do recommend one litter box per cat. One of my cats (I have three, and three electric litter boxes) uses on for pee pee and the other for poo poo. Interesting? Anyways. Three is better, especially the litter maid electric litter box. You will have to clean up less with two litter boxes! Plus if they are Territorial this would be a good move. Good Luck.

Remember the litterbox rule: # of cats + 1. So definitely with a new cat or kitten there should be three available around the house.

It is worth the extra effort to keep three boxes going as litterbox problems are about the worst thing that can happen with cats and you don't want to risk it.

I have two cats right now who are sharing the same litter box, and they are doing just fine. You MUST make sure to clean the litter box at least once a day, but I don't see any reason to buy another box. (Though, if you decide to do that, I recommend the kind with the lid to reduce odors).

I have two cats myself and I do have separate litter boxes for them, but I also, have to clean them everyday.

And watch the cat litter you do my make sure it is a good clumping formula. Not the clay kind either.

Cats do prefer separate litter trays, in fact it is not a bad idea to always have a spare tray placed away from their preferred one....just in case. Good luck with your new cat xxx

nope don't need to have two litter trays for them just have to make sure that you keep it clean or they won't use it like my cats when the litter tray is full they will go right beside it instead of in it
