How is it that some people can cook like they are angels (grandmothers usually are perfect), and others (like me lol) can't do anything in the kitchen except popcorn, french fries and sex?

Is it about the cook book? About what mothers teach you? Or is it an innate ability?

Anybody can cook. The key word in your Q is "good." With the right equipment you can be a good cook. Your thinking now "but I don't have all that fancy smancy stuff". I beg to differ, God gave you all the equipment you'll ever need, a minds eye (you can picuture in your head what you want to make), smell, (the first thing ppl notice when they walk into your house), the tounge, (if it don't taste good to you, you know what guests will do, the smile is must being polite) So! Think back, when you sat down at G'ma's table what did you see, smell, taste, or at that dandy restraunt you went to? The bottom line is you have to have fun, you'll hit some bombs, yes, but you'll find that homerun you nailed. The smiles now will come from the guests when they say "Can I have this recipe?" And for Sex? that's dessert. Enjoy

I started cooking at 4 with my mother and by 7 I was cooking meals for my family. By 10 I cooked all the meals with the exception of very few. I have cooked the majority of every holiday meal since I was 12 and now as a 27 year old man, I can cook anything I feel like cooking to perfection. My wife was never allowed in the kitchen growing up, not even when she was 15. her mom got nervious with other people in the kitchen so she never learned. I tried to teach her several times but she just doesn't get the basics like "don't cook everything on high" a mistake most people make when starting to cook. Now, my son is 6 years old and I supervise every meal he cooks. he's never told to cook, in fact he begs to cook because he loves doing it. I can tell you one thing for sure. No adult you know can make a better biscuit and gravy than my 6 year old boy. its every bit as good as mine and he never needs help figuring out what is missing or what it needs to taste better. I think a lot of it has to do with what age you start cooking. Some people feel like its just a means of getting a meal. I think of it as a labor of love and a bit of a treat to cook something to perfection. the finished product that brings a tear to someones eye is just a bonus.

Excellent question! It's definitely a combination of what you're raised w/, and I don't mean how good the food is, either. Even if Mom (or Dad) wasn't the world's greatest cook, if they loved being in the kitchen & cooked w/ passion, you kind of absorb that quality.

Sometimes it helps if you create a great atmosphere in the kitchen. Put on your favorite music, or pop a beloved movie in the DVD player, open a bottle of wine (if you're of age lol), even put on a cute apron. Don't give yourself a time limit, either. Really get into the chopping, dicing, sauteeing, etc. You may surprise yourself!! Cooking is a very passionate activity, enjoy it! :)

No, it's a learned ability. My mom didn't teach me how to cook because her mom didn't teach her how to cook.

So, I bought some beginner cookbooks and followed the recipes. I also learned some tips and pointers from friends and mothers of friends (and some guys, too!).

And practice! Host a dinner party for a few close friends. Have all new recipes and ask them to judge the food. Even give them a rating card like Iron Chef!

Innate ability, no. Cooking is very fundamental. the most important key to cooking is timing. Timing is everything.. Knowing what item will cook before another is key to bringing a nice meal all together. Have everything in front of you that will be needed as well. Running back and forth is no good. Be organized and clean as you go. There, I have laid it all before you.

I personally think practice makes perfect. It's fun to try new recipies. Usually if you follow instructions in a book, things should turn out ok. Good luck and have fun cooking some FOOD in the kitchen! ;-)

It's about following directions.

Find a recipe that you'd really love to try. Get the stuff. Clean the kitchen. Get out all measuring equipment. Follow the directions and you've got it. Once you've made it several times you'll be able to do it from memory. Once you do it from memory you'll be able to say ohh this would be good if I added broth instead of water....or whatever.

Practice makes perfect.

alittle bit of it all,, I am a pretty good cook,, even if I say so myself,, it's being brave enough to take a recipe and make it your own I think,, my mom taught me alot,, and also let me experienment on my own. A good soild cook book is a great place to start,, ask friends who you think are good cooks to let you watch them or ask them to help you learn one great dish from them,, and once you get a few down you will trying all kinda of new things.

Cooking is mostly about fun,, yes everyone has to eat ect. ect,, but cooking is a art and should be creative and fun!!!

Probably mostly a learned thing, however you do have to know what tastes good to cook good.

Your kitchen habits are fine. Dont change a thing.

It is weather you like it or not.
You can be a bad cook, but if you really want to cook good, learn!
Nobody born knowing...
Even the greater chef, have studied or someone has teach them, or learn by them self...
If you like it you will do it!
