When my son was having problems, I insisted he repeat the word or sentence until it was correct. When he would get frustrated I would say "No...you are saying it like this____ and you need to say it like_____"

Always tell him he does a good job when he tries and be patient.

If you haven't done so already, it might be a good idea to take him to the doctor and have his hearing checked also, as speech is sometimes difficult when a child has a hearing problem.

Also, talk to his teacher and see about getting him into the speech class. Most public schools have these, and should be available for all students.

Take your son to a speech therapist. Ask your pediatrician for some contacts and go with the one you believe is better suited. You can also help out by getting him to read books, to you or your spouse, out loud. I know he doesn't have a problem with reading (at least you didn't express that as your problem) but when a child reads more, out loud especially, there verbal abilities excell.

I based my answer on the assumption that your son has problems expressing words correctly (i.e. speaks: with a lisp or in a babyish way). A little more detail would help me in helping you.

I hope I could be of some help to you.

get the hooked on phonix. I would talk to the school and see if there is a speech theripist there or if they could recommend one. If you get a theripist like from a phone book it may be expensive but well worth it. You may need to work with him for an hour a night reeding to him and having him read to you. Good luck.

I am a first grade teacher and the best advice I have, besides refer to a speech therapist, is to REQUIRE your child to respond to you in complete sentences. Model for them (without anger). If your child knows partial speech is acceptable they won't improve. I feel the best way to learn proper speech is with practice.....have numerous conversations with your child. Oh yes, get their hearing checked also, if they don't hear correct speech they cannot create correct speech.

Just a thought have you had his hearing tested. I had trouble speaking as a child and come to find out i had inner ear trouble and i only had about a 4th of my hearing. After they corrected that i went to speech therapy and haven't had any problems since just an idea. good luck

Talk to your school Speech Therapist/Pathologist. Every school has one. Ask her what she would recommend. Most times, if your child has problems, the school has programs to help.
