I don't know for certain, but I do know that my family made snack sandwiches out of them when I was a kid back in the late 50's, early 60's. White bread, butter, and a bunch of Bread and Butter Pickles. If we were getting fancy, we'd add cheddar cheese. There were lots of sandwich fillings common in the 50's that we would consider weird today. Another possibility is that the phrase 'bread and butter' refers to something basic, an everyday thing. These pickles used to show up as a condiment with a basic meat and potatoes dinner.

IDK but besides homemade sour pickles, that my nana always made, they are the best!
