2 days at most. You don't want to put it off longer or it will turn into some thing much worse. Then who's to blame. Why would you want to make a little one suffer at all? Do you like being sick? I don't think so.

Most OTC medicine will say on the bottle:
Stop use and ask a doctor if:
~pain, cough or nasal congestion gets worse or lasts more than 3 (some meds say 5, use your own judgement) days, fever gets worse or lasts more than 3 days, new symptoms occur, cough comes back or occurs with rash or headache that lasts. These could be a sign of a serious condition.
Contact your childs physician or seek medical attention.
If you consider them bad, then I would take the child to the doctor, but as a mom myself, what you may see as suffering, may not be. If he/she is running a fever, it is the body's natural response to fighting an infection, it is not necesarily a bad thing. If the child has a horrible cough, try Delsym, it works great, tastes great and you only have to give it every 12 hours. It is the best thing I have discovered.
I wish you the best of luck and hopefully your little one will get better soon!

A cold can last 2 weeks. As long as a fever is not present and the child is acting normal, there is no need to rush to the doctor. Nothing can be done for a cold except OTC medicine to mask the symptoms. The problem arises when there is a phlegmmy cough, dark nasal discharge and wheezing too. It can turn into bronchitis or pneumonia. Push Lots of fluids.

Normally at 2 after getting cold medicine I would contact the pediatrician if there is a reoccurring of fever, if your child seems to be acting normally then I wouldn't worry about calling the pediatrician. Colds can last around 2 weeks or longer if they are in daycare due to the virus can pass from child to child. You don't want to wait a really long period of time without doing some type of medication due to the fact that it can turn into an upper respiratory infection or worse.

Definitely give him/her OTC ( over the counter) medicine from your local drugstore that is specifically reccommended according to the symptoms your child is showing. Administer the meds. as directed on packaging. If symptoms don't improve over the course of about 48 hours, then call the pediatrician to make an appt. to be seen! Depending on what type of infection the child is experiencing, whether it be bacterial or not, a new prescription may or may not be prescribed. When in doubt at all alwyas get a second opionion as it is always better to be safe rather than sorry!

I will wait 24-48 hours before going to the doc. It just depends on how bad it is. If there is a fever, then I try to take them the next day. If no fever, then 2-3 days max. Just use your motherly instincts!

As long as the fever does not go above 101 and they are taking in enough fluids and urinating normally 1 week. But if they are not bouncing around even though they are cranky and they are not drinking or they have a persistant fever then call you doctor right away.

wow, you let your kid suffer...that's horrible. My son got his first winter cold about a week ago. I let it go a few days until his coughing became worse. I gave him regular over the counter medicine every morning and evening before he went to bed. He was better in a few days. My advice is don't let your kid suffer lady, take him to the doctor and let them tell you whats going on. You don't know if he has something more serious than just the common cold.

As opposed to doing what? Most decongestants don't even work for small children. Maybe you could give Tylanol for fever or aches, but it seems to me that's about all you can do for a cold.
