I checked my road bike this morning on my porch. The tube was flat and there was a nail stuck in the tire. I'm wondering, did I pick that up on my last ride and get home somehow? Or did somone maybe stick a nail in my tire while my bike was unguarded?

Yes you can ride over a nail and not get a flat (well not instantly)
the leak will be a slow leak depending on the way you ride, the leak is covered by the nail but once you take the nail out, its pushing your bike back home time.

so next time if you know you have a nail stucked in your tire, do not pull it out ride it without putting too much pressure if its on the front ( try not to put pressure on the bar) as this will open the tube with the nail in it and leak the air out faster. if is the back that has hit the nail try to ride standing up and leaning frontwards. This way it will at least puncture slowly till you get to your LBS.

if its too far away from any shops. i suggest you bring a tube and pump next time. enjoy your ride. Cheers

it probably leaked slowly until you got home. if you have a really nice bike someone may have getten pissed at you for having such a nice ride and blew the tire. maybe some kids idea of a prank, but thats just my opinion....

Most likely you rode over it an it slowly leaked without you noticing until then. It has happened to me a couple of times.

you probably rode over the nail. then there is a slow leak so it wouldn't go flat at once. it took time for it to go flat.
