I Hitchiked all over California in the '60s and some of the best rides were with the godbelievers. A black family (they even bought me dinner)gave me a ride to my front door. But, by far most of the people did not stop for this longhaired hippie. I saw many a plastic Jesus on the dashboard drive by.

Different situations require different reactions....I am a bible believing, God loving, saved by the grace of God, Christian who would do anything that the Lord leads me to do...

I do not know about the sixties, as I was old enough to watch what was going on, but not old enough to join in. Born in 61.

I can tell you about picking up hitchikers in todays society. I will pick up a woman, not a man. I am the weaker vessel and cannot put myself or my children in potential danger. Not that a woman couldnt hurt us also, just that even with danger comes another point from God. I am not to go around picking up men without my husband with me, just that simple.

As a rule, hitchiking is much more dangerous for the hitchhiker now a days, and I advise my children against it. Cell phones are readily available for them to call home if they need help.

Just being a Christian does not mean that we cannot discern who we may give a ride to. We are still responsible to try and keep ourselves out of danger. I doubt very highly that the black family that gave you such a supportive and wonderful experience would have given you that same ride if only his wife had been present in the vehicle.

I did the same, across the US, Canada, and Mexico. The friendliest, most trusting were the Canadians. The Mexicans would give you a meal and put you up for the night.

The only times I was ever left stranded or robbed/harmed was here in my own country.

The poorest, most Christian like people I met was a black family in Mississippi that lived in a school bus. They were great, I loved them dearly, and I think of them often.

Yeah, but there are safety reasons for that, plus it's illegal. Once you get someone dangerous in your car, it's not like you can just flee the scene. You're in a confined space in a fast moving vehicle, and chances are you can't force someone out if they don't want to. Plus, you have to wonder about someone who hitchikes because it can be so dangerous. I don't think it's a matter of not being christian, you can be a good christian and not put yourself in harm's way.

You must not have read the news for many years. Have you never heard of people being car-jacked after stopping to pick up hitchhikers, murdered, kidnapped, robbed, or raped? Besides hitchhiking being illegal, God blessed us with knowledge to know better.

Now, if you were to approach our family at the gas station and told us you were out of gas, we would have given you money to purchase it. Or, if you were hungry, we would bring you inside and buy you a plate of food. But rides, no, it is never a good idea. Christian or non-Christian.

Best wishes always.

I did once. However, my husband has since pleaded with me never to do it again, since my duty amongst mankind belongs firstly to my children.

If times were different, and if people didn't run the risk of getting killed from a hitchhiker, then yeah, I'd have no problems with it. Until times change back to what they were (yeah, right), I have no probs paying for someone's cab ride or gas money though. It's safer and more effective than hitchhiking.
