From experience hun, stay away from love stories that will leave you feeling even more alone.
Go for comedies, live performances. I always find Lee Evans and Billy Connolly great entertainment value.
You could also watch films that empower single women, like Aeon Flux, Errin Brokovitch, Resident Evil if you like that kinda thing.
I also love watching kids films with my daughter, though she is a bit older now, you can't go wrong with Finding Nemo, Ice Age etc.
Books wise, I go for fantasy, Lord of the Rings type stuff, but that is purely personal preference... I like being able to integrate into the story and escape my life for a couple of hours.
Hope you find what suits you.
Good Luck

Children of men is an asolutely great film so I'm pretty sure the novel it is based on is even better - It's one of the best films I have seen for ages. I have been reading The devil wears prada - really good book but the film isn't all that amazing.

One great film which I've seen several times and still get new insights from is Beaches. It is a Bette Midler film about two very different friends and how their lives pan out in unexpected ways. Be warned though, the first time I watched it I sobbed my heart out, so have tissues handy. Other times, I still cried but for altogether different reasons.

Have you seen Emma with Guinneth Paltrol ?
How about reading Lady Chaterlys Lover,Its my favorite book of all times.

Movies - Look in the period films section at your local video store or library. Books - look in the romance or non-fiction section. I personally love all Nick Sparks books. He wrote "the notebook", "the wedding", Message in a bottle", the rescue, the guardian, A bend in the road, etc. Good luck
