My 1 year old Jack Russel Terrier only barks when someone knocks on the door. However, it takes her awhile before she stops, usually the person has to pet her. I am totally against shock collars for barking, but it can get really irritating sometimes. Im not sure if there is anything I can do to stop her barking, I have tried punishing her, it just does not seem to work. Any suggestions?

Give her a treat when she stops. Or just have everyone pet her when they first come in. If you have the money then have a professional help you on this one.

Sincerely yours,
Laurie

Training your dog to bark on command has another hidden feature - you can also train her to stop barking on command.

Hold a particular toy, such as a ball or squeak toy that causes your dog to bark. Give the command BARK or SPEAK.
When your dog barks say, GOOD.
Give him the toy or food as a reward and praise him.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 until your dog understands the command to bark.
When your dog understands the command, command him to bark.
After three barks say, QUIET or SILENCE or any other word(s) to command him not to bark. Praise and reward him with the toy.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until he understands the command.
Instead of using a toy, have someone knock on the door and repeat steps 2 through 7, rewarding him with praise and affection when he succeeds.

I also have a Jack Russel Terrior. He is 5 months and loves to bark at his tail. When he does, I hold his mouth shut for a couple of seconds and always repeat the same phrase- be quiet. I think he is catching on. Also, do it immediatly after she barks.

I used a water pistol. Every time she barked needlessly, I would squirt her with the water. It only took two weeks. Good luck with your dog.
