I know recession usually occurs with the natural aging process but can you completely prevent it from happening with good oral hygiene (brushing & flossing after every meal)?

Also, is it really that safe to floss a bit under the gums? Would that somehow cause recession? If done gently, would it?

~ Possibly. Theoretically.

~ You actually are supposed to.

~ It would be fine, if you do it right.

The most common cause of a receding gum line is from gum disease. Periodontal disease destroys the jaw bone underlying the gums so there's no support to hold the gums in place. However, gum disease takes years and years to destroy the bone and it's very preventable with good dental care. It's a dental infection so it should be treated aggressively just like all other infections.

Make sure you are getting enough Calcium and Vitamin C and D.
See your dentist regularly. Yes it is good to floss under the gum line gently to remove any food particles that may be trapped in there, such as popcorn.

I'm a dental Hygienist and I see gum recession all the time. The cause-brusing side to side. Answer; use a power brush.
Slide floss side to side until it's under your contact of your teeth. Then wrap it like the letter C and floss deep under your gums on each side of the tooth-it should not hurt. If it bleed do not stop this will clear up after they heal.
A water pik helps also Listerine 2x a day :-D

Flossing is good for your teeth, not bad. It helps prevent gingivitis. As far as brushing your teeth goes, make sure you brush well, but not too hard. I used to brush my teeth hard and my gums started recessing. My dentist told me to take it easy or he would have to do gum grafts. My teeth are sensitive now because of it, but I brush more gently to avoid further recession. Just don't brush too hard and floss daily. This should prevent any trouble with your gums.

Not brushing your teeth causes gum recession, as bacteria builds up and can get at your gums as well as the teeth. Brush, but don't brush too much.
