my braces (traditional metal - the cheapest) cost me $5000. It involvedgetting a bunch of x-rayts taken of my teeth and jaw, then getting small rubber bands in between my teeth (spacers) to make some room for a metal band to be placed around 2 of my molars. Brackets were glued to my teeth and an archwire threaded through and secured with colored ligatured - those little rubber bands that give braces colors. There is a whole color palate - even clear or silver. Repeat process with bottom teeth. I'm 28 years old - so i can tell you that having the metal braces is no big deal - i just don't alternate the color of my ligatures - that makes me look too young - not that that's a bad thing ;)

Braces of course straighten your teeth. The procedure is expensive and you have to keep going back to your orthodontist to have them re-tightened. I would recommend looking into invisalign braces, they are less painful and you don't have to keep going back to your orthodontist. Just speak with your dentist about it and if he thinks it's right for you then he will give you all the info you need and refer you to an orthodontist.

although braces are not cheap, they may be less expensive in the long run by correcting your bite and preventing bone loss and weakness, which would ultimately cost your more money (and maybe even the loss of your teeth)

metal wire glued to teeth is bent slightly each month in order to "straighten" their general alignment
