In the old days and in some places today, donut shops were open very early in the morning 2 or 3 am for the clerks to start making donuts.

There were no gas stations open, no all night grocrey stores, yes very scarey, towns actually shut down for the night.
Well officers tired from a boring night of nothing happening woujld go by the donut shop to get coffee early in the morning and hang out. The shops liked this since it gave them free security. So they would give the officers free coffee and sometimes free or 1/2 price donuts.

The rest is history

Police Officers work late shifts. Before the days of the 24 Hour Corner stores when everything closed up early, The only thing you could find open were the Donut shops. Police working the beat were able to stop in here and get coffee and a sugar high to help them make it through the night. Since its the only place open, they also became popular for Officers to hang out at and talk about their night when things got slow. Now days it is mostly just in the movies. Officers can communicate with each other via cell phones and in car computers. There is a 24 hour corner store around every bend where the Officers can fill up on an assortment of things to help them keep going. As my brother stated above however, Us South Texas police like Taquitos better than Donuts, and we need the added belt room for all our cool toys.

It's common for donut shops to give free coffee and donuts to cops. Hence, police have been seen often at donut shops and thus the stereotype began.

Before there were coffee shops and convenient stores and 24 hour gas stations selling coffee on every corner there were 24 hour donut shops that sell coffee which police frequented. Alot of officers, especially those who work nights and then spend a good portion of the day sitting in court drink alot of coffee.

Cops always drink coffee during the shift, and most coffee places served donuts, before Starbuck's. Now cops go to Starbuck's a lot.

I think it was because they are up at weird times and they get coffee. Some of them might have gone to pick up their coffee at a Dunkin Donuts so that might have done it.
